Racing Incident Report
On jumping, CHALLENGER got its head up and lost ground. At the 800 Metres, PACIFIC ALLIANCE was steadied when disappointed for running between ACCELERATION and LAZY BUDDIES. Also at the 800 Metres, BROWN BEAUTY was steadied away from the heels of NATURAL ECHO. Over about the final 200 Metres, BEST CHOICE, which was commencing to close the race off, had difficulty obtaining clear running and because of this was not fully tested. Just prior to the winning post, SPECTACULAR HIT shifted in and bumped LAZY BUDDIES which in turn caused PACIFIC ALLIANCE to be taken in, crowding the room of NATURAL ECHO which was steadied. Throughout the race, ACCELERATION raced wide and without cover. Prior to the declaration of weighed-in, the Stewards considered an application from S Dye, the rider of BEST CHOICE, and Mr C S Shum, trainer of the horse, that BEST CHOICE be declared a non-runner as in their opinion it had not had a fair start. The evidence including videos of the start disclosed that BEST CHOICE was fractious in its stall just prior to the gates opening, got its head up and as the start was effected momentarily had its nose behind an adjoining partition, as a consequence BEST CHOICE was slow to begin. In the opinion of the Stewards, this was not an appropriate set of circumstances in which to exercise their powers under Rule 12(19) and as such weighed-in was declared on the Judge's numbers. G Mossé (PACIFIC ALLIANCE) said today he from a wide draw had been instructed to ride the horse in a rearward position. He said PACIFIC ALLIANCE proved difficult to settle and as a consequence travelled wide in a slowly run race. He said after the 800 Metres he endeavoured to improve his position on PACIFIC ALLIANCE, the horse initially responded, but then over the concluding stages kept on one-paced. Mr S Woods, trainer of PACIFIC ALLIANCE, confirmed the instructions given to G Mossé and said at the horse's most recent start at Happy Valley it went in his opinion far too quickly in the early and middle stages and consequently gave ground in the Straight. He said from a wide draw he was concerned if PACIFIC ALLIANCE went forward again it might be left racing without cover and therefore wanted to endeavour to have the horse close the race off. He did say in future if the horse drew more favourably and circumstances permit, PACIFIC ALLIANCE would be ridden in a more forward position with cover. Mr Woods was told his explanation would be reported. ACCELERATION was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. After the race, ACCELERATION was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, ACCELERATION will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. LEGIONNAIRE, MEMBERS GLORY and CHALLENGER were sent for sampling. Following the race, LEGIONNAIRE was subjected to a veterinary examination at the request of the trainer. The Veterinary Officer reported an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, LEGIONNAIRE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Also following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported ELEPHANT DANCE had lost its left hind plate.
