Racing Incident Report

SKY HIGH was withdrawn on 3.1.06 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter HARVEST (Apprentice H W Lai). Before being allowed to race again, SKY HIGH will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Shortly after the start, FOURSQUARE was checked when crowded for room between SMARTY FACE which shifted in and FUNTRAP which was carried out by MANIFEST (Apprentice C W Wong) which on jumping shifted out, then shifted further before being straightened by its rider. Apprentice Wong was severely reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he would be expected to endeavour to straighten his mount sooner than he did on this occasion. In this incident, FUNTRAP was crowded for room, became unbalanced and as a consequence lost ground. In the early stages, SMARTY FACE hung in. At the 500 Metres, SMARTY FACE was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of SOUTHERN LIGHT. Making the Home Turn, GALBRAITH hung out badly and shifted wider on the track. On straightening, GRASS HOPPER was steadied away from the heels of GALBRAITH. At the 200 Metres, FUNTRAP became unbalanced. C Munce (CHAMPION WINNER), which was dropping back in distance tonight to the 1000 Metres, said the intention had been to have the horse as close to the lead as possible from the outside barrier. He said CHAMPION WINNER began well and GRASS HOPPER which had drawn to his inside immediately showed superior pace and went forward. He said after the 900 Metres when the race was being run at a quick tempo and he was wide on the track, he did not persevere in endeavouring to obtain a forward position, bearing in mind the horse was carrying 131 lbs. He said approaching the 600 Metres he hoped to obtain a position behind COMPANION with cover, however, that horse was unable to maintain its position and as a consequence CHAMPION WINNER raced at the rear but remained wide on the track. He said in the Straight CHAMPION WINNER did not close the race off in the manner in which he anticipated. FUNTRAP and CHAMPION WINNER were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of FUNTRAP and CHAMPION WINNER after the race did not show any significant findings. GALBRAITH, MANIFEST and GLORY YEARS were sent for sampling. Following the race, MILLION CHASE was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon at the request of Mr K L Man, trainer of the horse. He said an endoscopic examination showed the horse to have a substantial amount of blood in the trachea. Before being allowed to race again, MILLION CHASE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 5 January 2006)
The Senior Veterinary Officer reported that GALBRAITH and RED POWER were this morning found to be lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, both GALBRAITH and RED POWER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
