Racing Incident Report
ENGINEERING WONDER was a little slow to begin, then shortly afterwards was checked when crowded for room between FIRST AMONG EQUALS which shifted out after making contact with ALL'S WELL and GOLDEN SUN which was carried in by KING OF FISH which bounded in the air at the start and then was carried in by WIN AGAIN. No action was taken. STRONG SUN began awkwardly, bumped the inside gate of its stall, as a consequence lost ground and was shifted across behind runners. NOBLE SILENCE was slow to begin. Near the 800 Metres, NOBLE SILENCE was checked to avoid the heels of TIGER RIDGE which at this time lost ground when being steadied away from the heels of LUCKY UNICORN. At the 800 Metres, GOLDEN SUN was checked when crowded for room between CZAR OF PRUSSIA which shifted out slightly away from the heels of ALL'S WELL and SAVUTE which shifted in when racing tight inside WIN AGAIN. No action was taken. After the 400 Metres, LIBERAL'S KNIGHT was steadied when unable to improve between ALL'S WELL and CZAR OF PRUSSIA. Over the concluding stages, ALL'S WELL got its head on the side, shifted out and as a result raced tight with LIBERAL'S KNIGHT. Throughout the race, WIN AGAIN travelled wide and without cover, then in the early part of the Straight hung in. When questioned, Apprentice H W Lai said ENGINEERING WONDER travelled in a rearward position as expected. He said entering the Home Straight he was following LIBERAL'S KNIGHT and was to the inside of STRONG SUN. He said because of STRONG SUN he could not shift out, therefore he did not improve his position on ENGINEERING WONDER as he endeavoured to find clear running. He said near the 300 Metres STRONG SUN shifted in and carried him to a position behind LUCKY UNICORN. He said after the 200 Metres LUCKY UNICORN then shifted out and when that horse went forward, he followed it and made ground nicely, however, prior to the winning post he was close to the heels of LUCKY UNICORN and therefore did not continue to ride out. Apprentice Lai was told where possible he is to ensure his mounts are fully tested. When questioned, E Saint-Martin (NOBLE SILENCE) said he followed TIGER RIDGE into the Home Straight and shortly afterwards that horse commenced to shift out slightly. He said when this happened he was unsure as to whether clear running would present itself to the inside of that horse, therefore he remained behind it for a short distance. He said after the 400 Metres TIGER RIDGE commenced to drift in, he therefore shifted to the outside of that horse and started to ride along hands and heels, however, for some distance near the 200 Metres was awkwardly placed between TIGER RIDGE and ENGINEERING WONDER which at this time was shifting in. He said after the 200 Metres he rode NOBLE SILENCE along hands and heels, however, it was apparent to him that he would again have difficulty obtaining clear running, then after the 100 Metres he steadied to avoid the heels of KING OF FISH which was giving ground. He said over the concluding stages he again rode NOBLE SILENCE along hands and heels and the horse finished off well. E Saint-Martin was told where circumstances permit he should avail himself of opportunities to improve his position particularly at critical stages of the race. F Coetzee (LUCKY UNICORN) explained the intention had been to lead, however, because of the early pace of the race he said in his opinion he would have been required to make too much use of LUCKY UNICORN to hold a position inside NOBLE MAN, he therefore allowed NOBLE MAN to cross near the 900 Metres. He said after the 800 Metres he had to make some use of LUCKY UNICORN to hold a position inside ALL'S WELL as he raced in restricted room to the inside of that horse which was awkwardly placed close to the heels of KING OF FISH. He said at this time LUCKY UNICORN was reluctant to hold its position. LUCKY UNICORN, ALL'S WELL and LIBERAL'S KNIGHT were sent for sampling.
