Racing Incident Report

When questioned, Apprentice K L Chui (SHINING DAY) said after passing the winning post on the first occasion he considered shifting across to race outside CASH IN, however, the rider of GOLD DIGGER who was behind him to his inside was calling loudly. He believed if he were to shift at that time, he might cause interference to GOLD DIGGER, he therefore continued to race four wide around the first turn. He said SHINING DAY was able to shift across to a three wide position entering the Back Straight, however, continued to race without cover. After viewing the films, Apprentice Chui conceded that he was sufficiently clear of GOLD DIGGER in the early stages to shift in. He was told where circumstances permit he should ride his mounts in a manner which prevents them from covering extra ground. When questioned regarding his riding after the 600 Metres, Apprentice H W Lai (MAGIC TOUCH) said the intention had been to have the horse make its run on the outside. He said he did not initially believe there was an opportunity for him to shift away from the rail at the 600 Metres, he therefore continued to race on the rail. He said rounding the Home Turn WAIT FOR ME had improved on his outside which prevented him from moving away from the rail and he elected not to improve his position but rather wait to see if an opportunity eventuated to allow him to shift out. He said shortly after straightening it became apparent to him that WAIT FOR ME would remain on his outside, he therefore improved his position towards the inside between horses. After viewing the films, Apprentice Lai conceded there was an opportunity for him to shift away from the rail at the 600 Metres. Apprentice Lai was told his riding from the 600 Metres had been of concern to the Stewards and he should always avail himself of opportunities which exist to improve his position particularly at vital stages of the race. CASH IN, MYTHIC STEED and TIRAMISU were sent for sampling.
