Racing Incident Report
After being boxed, WINNING SMILE became fractious, lunged forward and broke open the front gates of it stall. WINNING SMILE did not break through itself, however, then continued to be fractious and reared over. Acting on veterinary advice that WINNING SMILE had injured itself and was not suitable to race, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of the horse. The Veterinary Surgeon reported that WINNING SMILE had in his opinion sustained a suspected severe injury to its head and neck area and was unable to stand. This injury required WINNING SMILE to be humanely euthanased. All other runners were removed from the barriers and the start of this race was delayed while the track was cleared. Making the first turn, ONLY YOU was steadied away from the heels of DOUCAI which momentarily shifted in. In the early and middle stages, CELESTIAL WONDER hung out. Entering the Back Straight, SILVERBIRD was awkwardly placed when improving its position on the inside of CELESTIAL WONDER. At the 800 Metres, W M Lai (WORLD SERIES) dropped his whip. E Saint-Martin (DOUCAI) said the intention had been to ride the horse in 4th or 5th position. He said he endeavoured to shift in to avoid being caught wide in the early stages, however, he was not clear of runners to his inside, therefore he was obliged to race wide. He said in the middle stages he continued to be held wide by CELESTIAL WONDER which was racing to his inside and hanging out. He said DOUCAI did not travel comfortably from the 700 Metres, was under pressure, and the manner in which the horse gave ground caused him concern and because of this he did not ride it out in the Home Straight. The performance of DOUCAI, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, DOUCAI will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. W M Lai said he rode WORLD SERIES along in the early stages, however, at no stage did the horse travel and felt uncomfortable. He said he became concerned near the 700 Metres that WORLD SERIES might have bled by the manner in which it was racing. He said when WORLD SERIES continued to feel uncomfortable underneath him, he did not continue to ride the horse out. The performance of WORLD SERIES was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, WORLD SERIES will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. F Coetzee (ONLY YOU) was unable to offer an explanation for the poor performance of the horse. He said he did not believe the crowding he received on the first turn was of great significance. He said afterwards ONLY YOU did not respond to his riding and was most disappointing. Apprentice K L Chui (SHINING DAY) said the intention had been to have the horse ridden in a forward position and to lead if possible. He said SHINING DAY began only fairly, he rode along to go forward and endeavoured to follow DOUCAI across. He said DOUCAI was held wide and therefore after entering the Back Straight he went forward of that horse and shortly afterwards he again had to shift ground as KING OF SPADES shifted out from the rail and kept him in a three wide position. He said because of this SHINING DAY kept on only one-paced in the Home Straight. SHINING DAY was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. WORLD SERIES, DOUCAI and ONLY YOU were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SHINING DAY, WORLD SERIES, DOUCAI and ONLY YOU after the race did not show any significant findings. JOY TRUMPS and OPERA MAGIC were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 23 October 2006)
DOUCAI, which finished tailed out, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. DOUCAI was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer T W Leung yesterday morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in the right front leg. As previously advised, DOUCAI will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being allowed to race again.
