Racing Incident Report
Prior to the running of Race 3, NOBLE SILENCE was withdrawn by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (fever). Before being allowed to race again, NOBLE SILENCE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SUNBELL and FORTUNE WARRIOR were slow to begin. GALLANT KNIGHT began awkwardly, causing R Moore to lose the use of his left stirrup. R Moore was not able to regain the use of his left stirrup until near the 1100 Metres and was therefore placed at a severe disadvantage. After the 1500 Metres, VISIONNAIRE was checked when crowded for room between CARRIZO CREEK and GALLANT KNIGHT which was crowded for room and carried in by FLORAL PRINCE which got its head on the side and shifted in away from WHIPLASH which itself had its head on the side and shifted ground. In the circumstances, no action was taken. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, TOP SCORER was steadied when crowded for room inside the heels of CALIFORNIAMOUNTAIN which shifted in when barely clear. An inquiry was opened into the reason for W M Lai being dislodged from CARRIZO CREEK after passing the winning post on the first occasion. After taking evidence from Y Take (CALIFORNIAMOUNTAIN), D Whyte (FLORAL PRINCE) and G Boss (DASHING THUNDER), the inquiry was adjourned to a date to be fixed as W M Lai was transported to hospital. When CARRIZO CREEK blundered, DASHING THUNDER and GALLANT KNIGHT were severely hampered and checked. FORTUNE WARRIOR, VISIONNAIRE and SUNBELL were hampered and taken wider to avoid the fallen rider. Near the 1100 Metres, TOP SCORER was shifted wider when the riderless horse, CARRIZO CREEK, improved on its inside. At the 600 Metres, SUNBELL got its head on the side, shifted in and was steadied away from the heels of FRIENDSHIP. D McDonogh (VISIONNAIRE) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 450 Metres he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of GALLANT KNIGHT and FRIENDSHIP, causing those horses to lose their rightful running and be checked and in turn hampered TOP SCORER which was racing outside FRIENDSHIP. In the circumstances of this case, D McDonogh was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday 21 December 2006 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting next Sunday 10 December 2006. On straightening, CALIFORNIAMOUNTAIN was steadied and shifted to the outside of the riderless horse. The performance of TOP SCORER, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, TOP SCORER will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. As the Stewards were satisfied the riding of D McDonogh, 3rd placegetter, did not affect the horse's finishing position, he was nonetheless reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts out at least hands and heels right to the winning post. A Starke (WHIPLASH) said throughout the race the horse did not appear to be breathing normally and this in his opinion attributed to the horse's poor performance. WHIPLASH was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of WHIPLASH after the race did not show any significant findings. FORTUNE WARRIOR and CALIFORNIAMOUNTAIN were sent for sampling.
