Racing Incident Report

Due to a malfunction, the bell which is automatically triggered by the Starter's mechanism which signifies the commencement of the race failed to operate. This bell was manually activated. SUNNY RIVIERA and NAMJONG MONEY were slow to begin. After the 1700 Metres, SNIPER was steadied when awkwardly placed inside ELFHELM. After the 1400 Metres, CHINSOLA proved difficult to settle when close to the heels of PRIMIATA. After the 1200 Metres, PACIFIC ALLIANCE, which was proving difficult to settle, was shifted out and allowed to stride forward. At the 300 Metres, PRIMIATA was steadied and shifted to the outside of PACIFIC ALLIANCE into clear running. Approaching and passing the 200 Metres, BROWN BEAUTY had difficulty obtaining clear running. At the 100 Metres, PACIFIC ALLIANCE and PRIMIATA were crowded for room inside ELFHELM (A Starke) which when being ridden out shifted in. A Starke was advised to exercise greater care. At the 50 Metres, CHINSOLA, which was closing the race off strongly, was steadied and shifted out away from the heels of DURABLE which was giving ground. In the Straight, WONG'S SUCCESS hung in and proved difficult to ride and after the 100 Metres was steadied when unable to obtain clear running. The performance of PURPLE GOLD, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, PURPLE GOLD will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When questioned, Apprentice C K Tong (DURABLE) said he had been instructed because the horse is a staying type which does not possess a sprint to endeavour to lead the field at a steady tempo in the early stages and then commence to ride the horse along from the 700 Metres. Mr C Fownes, trainer of DURABLE, confirmed the riding instructions issued to Apprentice Tong and said in his opinion riding the horse in this manner providing it gets a steady tempo in the early stages is to its best advantage. DURABLE, ELFHELM and SUNNY RIVIERA were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted PURPLE GOLD had sustained a laceration to the right hind pastern.
