Racing Incident Report

C Soumillon (MASTER POWER) was fined $4,000 for accepting this ride when overweight. Permission was given for Y T Cheng to be substituted as the rider of MASTER POWER. MASTER POWER proved difficult to load. Before being allowed to race again, MASTER POWER will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. MULLAAD and MASTER POWER were slow to begin. From a wide barrier, SYDNEY OWNER was taken across behind runners. In the early and middle stages, HONGKONG SUPERSTAR proved difficult to settle. Also in the early and middle stages, CHATER POWER travelled wide and without cover. At the 800 Metres, WEALTHY TREASURE got its head on the side, shifted out and then raced without cover. In the early part of the Straight, HONGKONG SUPERSTAR had difficulty obtaining clear running. Near the 300 Metres, MASTER POWER, which was having difficulty obtaining clear running, was steadied when crowded for room between WEALTHY TREASURE and HONGKONG SUPERSTAR which at this time shifted out slightly. Over the final 200 Metres, FRIENDLY GAINS hung out. Throughout the race, KING ENCOSTA travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding his riding in the Home Straight, A Delpech (ORIENTAL MAGIC), which was racing first up from a spell today, said he had been instructed to give the horse a chance to settle. He said ORIENTAL MAGIC travelled comfortably in the run on the rail in a position just behind midfield. He said on straightening he was following GALLANT LION and in his opinion there was not an opportunity for him to improve his position outside that horse. He said he did ride ORIENTAL MAGIC along hands and heels to maintain his position. He said approaching the 200 Metres he felt GALLANT LION may shift out and endeavour to find clear running itself and if it did so he intended on shifting to the inside of that horse. He said when GALLANT LION remained racing close to the rail, he then near the 150 Metres shifted into clear running on the outside of that horse. He said at this time he improved his position, however, continued to have difficulty obtaining clear running and therefore when the opportunity existed he shifted his mount to the outside of KING ENCOSTA. He said when in the clear ORIENTAL MAGIC closed the race off strongly. Mr J Size, the trainer of ORIENTAL MAGIC, said in his opinion the race was slowly run in the early stages and as a consequence the final 400 Metres was run quickly. He said because of this it appeared to him that ORIENTAL MAGIC took some time to quicken in the early part of the Straight and in his opinion ORIENTAL MAGIC was ridden hand and heels, however, did not respond until after the 200 Metres. He said he was satisfied with the riding of A Delpech. A Delpech was severely reprimanded and told his riding in the early part of the Straight in the opinion of the Stewards lacked the required urgency and he was told in similar circumstances he would be expected to make a greater effort to improve his position sooner than he did on this occasion. Mr Size was told his explanation would be reported. FRIENDLY GAINS, ULTRA FANTASY and KING ENCOSTA were sent for sampling.
