Racing Incident Report
The Stewards considered an application from Trainer D E Ferraris that he be permitted to withdraw SUPER SURPRISE as A Delpech, the horse's declared rider, was indisposed and he did not believe the available riders were in the circumstances suitable. Having in mind there were a number of riders available to accept the engagement on SUPER SURPRISE, the Stewards did not accede to the application from Mr Ferraris and directed that he should engage a replacement rider. M W Leung was subsequently substituted as the ride of SUPER SURPRISE. When proceeding to the barriers, HURRAY HURRAY proved fractious, resulting in B Prebble being dislodged. SUPER SURPRISE was slow to begin. As the start was effected, FAT DRAGON lifted its front feet off the ground and lost ground. After this, despite being ridden along, FAT DRAGON failed to muster speed and throughout the race travelled wide and without cover. Shortly after the start, OPERA MAGIC was momentarily crowded for room between HURRAY HURRAY and KING OF FISH which shifted out. In the early stages, CIRCULAR MACHINE proved difficult to settle and got its head up on a number of occasions. At the 700 Metres, OPERA MAGIC was awkwardly placed on the heels of CIRCULAR MACHINE, shifted out and made contact with DR MORE, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. Shortly after straightening, SYDNEY OWNER was steadied when disappointed for running between GALLANT KNIGHT and EXPEDITIOUS. For some distance approaching and passing the 200 Metres, ROMANTIC GREEN (S Dye) and HURRAY HURRAY bumped as a result of ROMANTIC GREEN shifting out. S Dye will be advised to make every endeavour to keep his mounts on a straight course. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of EXPEDITIOUS which was first up from a spell today, Apprentice K L Chui stated in his opinion EXPEDITIOUS, whilst it has been successful on rain affected tracks in the past, did not handle the conditions first up in today's race. He added he placed EXPEDITIOUS under pressure shortly after straightening, however, the horse did not respond to his riding and was disappointing in its failure to finish its race off. Y T Cheng (OPERA MAGIC) stated he was instructed to take up a forward position on the horse, however, despite his riding along OPERA MAGIC failed to respond to his riding in the early stages and raced much further back than was intended. He added although OPERA MAGIC had won on rain affected tracks in the past, in his opinion the horse did not handle today's track conditions. EXPEDITIOUS was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. OPERA MAGIC and HURRAY HURRAY were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of EXPEDITIOUS, OPERA MAGIC and HURRAY HURRAY after the race did not show any significant findings. MASTER POWER and FAT DRAGON were sent for sampling.
