Racing Incident Report
AMAZING JOURNEY began awkwardly and lost ground. At the 1300 Metres, when being steadied, FOREST FOUNTAIN got its head up. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, FOREST FOUNTAIN again got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of SPIRIT OF LO PAN. At the 700 Metres, FOREST FOUNTAIN was hampered by FORTUNE WARRIOR which when being steadied away from the heels of LIGHTNING SUCCESS shifted out. AMAZING JOURNEY, which was following, was checked in consequence. At the 600 Metres, BOLD CHAMPION became unbalanced when being checked away from the heels of MUTUAL FRIENDSHIP. At the 250 Metres, LIGHTNING SUCCESS got its head on the side, shifted out and was steadied away from the heels of DASH which was giving ground. At the 200 Metres, MUTUAL FRIENDSHIP and TOUCH MORE were momentarily crowded for room inside DIAMOND PRINCE which got its head on the side and shifted in momentarily. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they considered an incident occurred inside the final 200 Metres which cast doubt on whether AMAZING JOURNEY ought to be declared the winner of the race. Consideration was given to a protest/objection lodged by J Winks, the rider of PACIFIC ALLIANCE, 2nd placegetter, against AMAZING JOURNEY (D Whyte) being declared the winner alleging interference inside the final 100 Metres. The evidence disclosed that after the 50 Metres AMAZING JOURNEY shifted out and brushed PACIFIC ALLIANCE, causing that horse to shift wider on the track. Bearing in mind the nose margin between the horses at the end of the race and that PACIFIC ALLIANCE continued to take ground off AMAZING JOURNEY in the run to the line, the Stewards believed that had the inconvenience to PACIFIC ALLIANCE not occurred, that horse would have finished in front of AMAZING JOURNEY, therefore the protest/objection was sustained. Accordingly AMAZING JOURNEY was placed immediately behind PACIFIC ALLIANCE and weighed-in was declared on the amended placings which were No. 8, PACIFIC ALLIANCE, 1st; No. 5, AMAZING JOURNEY, 2nd; No. 2, MUTUAL FRIENDSHIP, 3rd; and No. 10, FEEL THE FUN, 4th. Throughout the race, DASH travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, G Mossé (SPIRIT OF LO PAN) said he had been instructed to go forward on his mount if possible. He said in accordance with those instructions he rode SPIRIT OF LO PAN along in the early stages in an endeavour to obtain a forward position, however, he soon noted runners to his outside were going forward of him and it appeared to him that the initial tempo of the race was reasonable. He said he believed he would have been required to make too much use of SPIRIT OF LO PAN to continue going forward in the early stages and he therefore allowed other runners to go forward in the hope that the tempo of the race would steady. He said when the tempo of the race steadied near the 1200 Metres and SPIRIT OF LO PAN was left racing wide on the track, he then endeavoured to go forward of runners to his inside and obtain a position with cover behind the lead. He said SPIRIT OF LO PAN did not quicken as he had hoped, however, he was able to obtain a position with cover for a short distance making the turn at the 800 Metres. He said as the tempo of the race in the middle stages was moderate, he commenced riding SPIRIT OF LO PAN along prior to straightening and hoped that the horse would improve its position. He said SPIRIT OF LO PAN disappointed him in the manner in which it responded to his riding and in the Straight kept on one-paced. SPIRIT OF LO PAN was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SPIRIT OF LO PAN after the race did not show any significant findings. FEEL THE FUN, PACIFIC ALLIANCE and AMAZING JOURNEY were sent for sampling.
