Racing Incident Report
Whilst in the holding stables, TELECOM EMPEROR had an adjustment made to its left hind plate. TELECOM EMPEROR was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. TELECOM EMPEROR was slow into stride. Shortly after the start, SUPER SPECIAL and SINGLE MALT bumped on several occasions when racing tight inside MUTUAL GAIN. Near the 900 Metres, MAXIMUM CHARM was steadied away from the heels of NOT QUITE PERFECT which had its head on the side and shifted ground while hanging. Shortly after the 900 Metres, TELECOM EMPEROR was steadied when crowded for room inside NOT QUITE PERFECT which shifted in slightly while continuing to hang. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, FAST WINNER, which was hanging in, became unbalanced after being bumped on the hindquarters by FOREVER SUPPORT which shifted out after initially getting its head on the side, shifting in and bumping with MAXIMUM CHARM. Making the turn after the 600 Metres, FAST WINNER continued to hang in. Near the 200 Metres, CHAIN WIN, which was commencing to give ground, became unbalanced when being steadied while crowded for room between NOT QUITE PERFECT and OPTIC KING which shifted out slightly. No action was taken. At the 150 Metres, Z Purton (CHAIN WIN) had difficulty changing the whip into his right hand. At the 100 Metres, NOT QUITE PERFECT shifted in and made contact with OPTIC KING. Throughout the race, FAST WINNER travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, Mr Y S Tsui, the trainer of SHINING DRAGON, said he instructed Y T Cheng, the horse’s rider, to position his mount in 7th or 8th position if possible. He said in tonight’s race SHINING DRAGON was dropping back in distance to 1000 Metres and had drawn the widest barrier. He said he believed a number of runners drawn towards the inside had superior early speed to SHINING DRAGON and he felt too much use would have to be made of the horse to obtain a forward position and if it were not able to do so it would be left racing wide and without cover. He did say SHINING DRAGON travelled further back than he had intended. Y T Cheng confirmed the riding instructions issued to him. He said SHINING DRAGON had been a little fractious in its stall prior to the start being effected and because of this he had a slightly tighter hold of his mount than usual when the gates opened. He said as a consequence SHINING DRAGON got its head up and lost ground. He said when this occurred he decided to steady SHINING DRAGON and commenced to shift across behind runners. He said near the 800 Metres he again steadied SHINING DRAGON to shift to the inside of SUPER SPECIAL which had been ridden along to go forward. He said because of these incidents SHINING DRAGON travelled further back than was intended. Z Purton was not able to offer an explanation for the poor performance of the horse. He said after being ridden along in the early stages CHAIN WIN was able to obtain a position outside the lead near the 800 Metres. He said after this CHAIN WIN travelled a little keenly, however, was a beaten horse prior to straightening. He said when placed under pressure CHAIN WIN felt weak and did not respond to his riding. CHAIN WIN was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of CHAIN WIN after the race did not show any significant findings. NOT QUITE PREFECT and OPTIC KING were sent for sampling.
