Racing Incident Report

At declaration time, Apprentice K C Leung was declared as the rider of both BRAVE HEART and MIGHTY WINNER. It was established that Apprentice Leung had a firm commitment to ride MIGHTY WINNER. As such, the Stewards permitted D Whyte to be substituted as the rider of BRAVE HEART. For this declaration error, Trainer P O’Sullivan was fined $2,000. ALWAYS ON TOP proved difficult to saddle and then, when being saddled, lost its left hind plate. This plate was refitted in the saddling stalls. Due to the difficulty in saddling ALWAYS ON TOP and it being required to be re-shod, ALWAYS ON TOP did not parade. ALWAYS ON TOP was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said it was suitable to race. Trainer T W Leung was advised that a warning will be placed on ALWAYS ON TOP in relation to its pre-race manners and should it again prove difficult to saddle, further action may be taken against it. Mr Leung was also fined a sum of $3,000 for presenting ALWAYS ON TOP out of the saddling stalls with blinkers which had been removed for today’s race. Both CHIEF SUCCESSOR and SPICY SHRIMP were slow to begin. BRAVE HEART began awkwardly. MANY GAINS began awkwardly and then shortly after the start was crowded for room between SPEED RACER and KIMBER FORTUNE which shifted out. BRAVE HEART raced greenly in the early and middle stages and travelled wide and without cover throughout the race. At the 1000 Metres, SPICY SHRIMP proved difficult to settle and was checked away from the heels of SPEED RACER. SPICY SHRIMP continued to prove difficult to settle for some distance after this. Making the first turn near the 850 Metres, MANY GAINS raced tight between SOLAR WONDER and HIGH RETURN (W M Lai) which shifted in when proving difficult to settle. W M Lai was advised to ensure he leaves sufficient racing room for his fellow riders in similar circumstances. CHIEF SUCCESSOR, which was following MANY GAINS and was also proving difficult to settle, was restrained away from the heels of MANY GAINS in this incident. Approaching the 600 Metres, HIGH RETURN shifted out when continuing to prove difficult to settle, resulting in SPEED RACER being taken wider. In the Straight, BRAVE HEART got its head on the side and lay out. A veterinary inspection of MANY GAINS after the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. A veterinary inspection of SPICY SHRIMP after the race did not show any significant findings. HIGH RETURN, GUAN DAO and BRAVE HEART were sent for sampling.
