Racing Incident Report

LUCKY FOLLOW ME was withdrawn on 16.2.13 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter DRAGON BACHELOR (D Whyte). Before being allowed to race again, LUCKY FOLLOW ME will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in to view an incident at the start involving AFFLUENCE OF RAIN. After viewing the videos, it was established that after being loaded, VITAL GOLD proved very fractious. Then just prior to the start being effected, AFFLUENCE OF RAIN, which was in the stall adjoining that occupied by VITAL GOLD, also became fractious and lunged at the front gates and then as the start was effected lost a considerable amount of ground. As the Stewards were of the opinion that AFFLUENCE OF RAIN had been afforded a fair start, that horse was declared a runner. Having in mind AFFLUENCE OF RAIN’s previous record with respect to its barrier manners and the circumstances of today’s incident, the Stewards ruled that AFFLUENCE OF RAIN must barrier trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start. Before being allowed to race again, VITAL GOLD will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test.
MENTOR began only fairly and then shortly after the start was steadied when crowded for room between FAY DEEP and BORN TO WIN which shifted out. After this, despite being ridden along, MENTOR did not muster speed.
From wide barriers, VITAL GOLD and FAY DEEP were taken across behind runners shortly after the start.
When being steadied to obtain cover in the early stages, SECRET SHAM proved difficult to settle and got its head up on a number of occasions.
Approaching the 800 Metres, HAPPY CHAMPION proved difficult to settle and was awkwardly placed close to the heels of FUJIAN SPIRIT. In this incident, HAPPY CHAMPION shifted out away from the heels of FUJIAN SPIRIT and consequently raced three wide and without cover.
Near the 600 Metres, BEST JADE TRIUMPH was steadied away from the heels of OPEN SESAME.
Near the 350 Metres, DRAGON BACHELOR was steadied when disappointed for running between BORN TO WIN and BEST JADE TRIUMPH which shifted out slightly.
SMART KIDS was unable to obtain clear running until passing the 200 Metres.
Near the 50 Metres, HAPPY CHAMPION, OPEN SESAME and VITAL GOLD all became unbalanced when crowded for room outside SMART KIDS which at this time was taken out by FUJIAN SPIRIT (U Rispoli) which shifted out under pressure. U Rispoli was severely reprimanded and advised to make more effort to straighten his mounts in future.
Near the 25 Metres, VITAL GOLD was struck over the nose by the whip of Y T Cheng (SMART KIDS).
G Mossé was found guilty of a breach of Rule 100(2) in that he failed to ride OPEN SESAME, 7th placegetter, out to the end of the race to the satisfaction of the Stewards. For this offence, G Mossé was fined the sum of $20,000.
When questioned, M Chadwick stated that he had been instructed to ride BORN TO WIN in about a midfield position from barrier 10 if possible. He said it was explained to him that when racing in a forward position in some of its previous starts, the horse had not settled and therefore had not been able to close off the race. He said he was instructed to ensure if possible that BORN TO WIN got cover and therefore was able to close off the race today. He said in the early stages he was left racing wide and without cover and when the pace of the race was slow making the first turn, he did give consideration to riding his mount along to obtain a forward position but closer to the rail. He said however that the field compacted at this time and he felt that it was available to him to get cover behind BOMBER JET approaching the 800 Metres, however, due to the slow tempo of the race, BORN TO WIN was not able to shift in behind BOMBER JET and consequently remained racing wide and without cover for the majority of the race.
A veterinary inspection of AFFLUENCE OF RAIN after the race did not show any significant findings.
HAPPY CHAMPION, SECRET SHAM and FUJIAN SPIRIT were sent for sampling.
