Racing Incident Report

COGITO jumped very awkwardly and threw its head about. On jumping, STRIKERS was crowded for room between SURPLUS and ALEXANDRA PALACE. In the early and middle stages, from a difficult gate, DOLLARS AND SENSE was obliged to travel wide and without cover, then in the Straight hung in badly, proved difficult to ride out and several times C Brown stopped riding and straightened to avoid crowding MILLENNIUM SUPREME. About the 200 Metres, COGITO was steadied when momentarily awkward behind SURPLUS. After the 200 Metres, ALEXANDRA PALACE became unbalanced when crowded between SURPLUS and GOLDEN DUKE which shifted in. Near the winning post, STRIKERS was steadied and shifted out when disappointed for running between CENTURY HORSE and FOREST SPRING. F Coetzee (MILLENNIUM SUPREME) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse somewhere just off the pace and to ride it with cover if possible. He said however because of the way the race was being run, he was unable to carry out the instructions he had been given and in the circumstances he thought it was in the best interests of MILLENNIUM SUPREME to allow the horse to travel comfortably and go forward. D Whyte (PREMIER TREASURE) pleaded guilty to a breach of Rule 132(iii) in that he had failed to ride the horse out to the end of the race to the satisfaction of the Stewards. After considering the submissions put by D Whyte and taking into account the circumstances of this case including the fact that the Stewards did not believe the result of the race was altered in any way, they deemed the appropriate penalty be that D Whyte be fined $20,000.
