Racing Incident Report

When the gates opened, CHATER DE LAGO bounded in the air and lost ground. HAPPY CRUSADER was slow to begin. On jumping, HARRY HARRY was crowded for room between ARROGANCE and FRONTIER. In the early stages, CENTENNIAL SMILE hung in. Apprentice C W Wong (FRONTIER) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that after the 1200 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of KAISER'S CHOIX, resulting in that horse losing its rightful running and being checked. Apprentice Wong was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Monday 8 October 2007 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting on Wednesday 26 September 2007. In addition, Apprentice Wong was fined $10,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating 1 further raceday. After the 1200 Metres, when FRONTIER crossed to the fence, the tempo of the race steadied noticeably. As a consequence, KAISER'S CHOIX, FANTASTIC WIN and HAPPY CRUSADER were checked. Apprentice Wong was told to avoid steadying the tempo of races so as to cause interference to other runners. Near the 1000 Metres, HARRY HARRY, which in the early and middle stages travelled wide and without cover, was hampered by HAPPY CRUSADER which when proving difficult to settle shifted out. After entering the Back Straight, CENTENNIAL SMILE proved difficult to settle. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, HAPPY CRUSADER was inconvenienced inside HARRY HARRY which shifted ground while hanging in. Approaching and passing the 200 Metres, FANTASTIC WIN was held up and unable to obtain clear running. At the 150 Metres, HARRY HARRY was steadied when crowded for room between HAPPY CRUSADER (E Saint-Martin) which shifted in and MASTER DREAMER which initially shifted out of its own accord and then was carried out further by FRONTIER which got its head on the side and shifted ground. Shortly after this, MASTER DREAMER was steadied when disappointed for running between HAPPY CRUSADER and FRONTIER, both of which shifted further ground. Both E Saint-Martin and Apprentice Wong were advised in similar circumstances they would be expected to stop riding and straighten their mounts. For the major part of the race, MASTER DREAMER travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding the improved performance of HAPPY CRUSADER, Mr Y S Tsui, trainer of the horse, said after the horse had suffered a pelvic injury in October last year, it required a long period of recuperation. He said because of the injury, despite his efforts to obtain the services of senior riders, he was not able to do so and as such the horse was ridden by apprentice jockeys in its subsequent 3 starts. He said HAPPY CRUSADER had benefited during its spell in the off season and was aided tonight by dropping to Class 4. He said despite the improvement in HAPPY CRUSADER, he felt the horse was at best a place chance and indeed he believed his stable's other runner, FANTASTIC WIN, would have a better chance tonight. Mr Tsui was told his explanation would be reported and he was to endeavour to ensure HAPPY CRUSADER perform consistently in future. S Dye (KAISER'S CHOIX) said the intention had been to lead with the horse and because of this he rode his mount vigorously in the early stages. He said when FRONTIER persisted in going forward on his outside near the 1200 Metres and then shifted in, he was not able to maintain the lead. He said when placed under pressure KAISER'S CHOIX failed to quicken and was most disappointing. He added the horse might not have been suited by backing up on 7 days at this stage of its preparation. KAISER'S CHOIX was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, KAISER'S CHOIX was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, KAISER'S CHOIX will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. HAPPY CRUSADER and FRONTIER were sent for sampling.
