Racing Incident Report

An inquiry into the reason for SWEET BABY, Reserve No. 3, having to be withdrawn from this event due to an inadvertent medication was adjourned until a date to be fixed as Trainer P F Yiu was unavailable to attend today’s races due to overseas commitments. As the start was effected, SPLENDID CHAMPION lifted its front feet off the ground and consequently was slow to begin. At the start, AMBITIOUS OWNER was crowded for room between PACIFIC ALLIANCE and UNITED, both of which shifted ground. Y T Cheng (LUCKY PHOTO FRAME) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that passing the 900 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of TOP DRAGON, causing that horse to be restrained away from the heels of LUCKY PHOTO FRAME and that after reaching the lead he steadied the tempo of the race on LUCKY PHOTO FRAME, causing TOP DRAGON, AMBITIOUS OWNER, SPLENDID CHAMPION and EVER KING all to be severely checked in consequence. Y T Cheng was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Monday, 15 March 2010 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley racemeeting next Wednesday, 3 March 2010. In addition, Y T Cheng was fined $30,000 in lieu of a suspension which would incorporate one further raceday. Rounding the Home Turn, PACIFIC ALLIANCE was steadied when disappointed for running between GLENEALY VIKING and SPARKLING which improved quickly to the outside of PACIFIC ALLIANCE. For some distance in the early part of the Straight, AMITYSHIP was steadied after being disappointed for running between QUANTUM EXPRESS and GOLD RUSH, both of which commenced to give ground. GENERAL SMILE was held up for clear running until rounding the Home Turn and then near the 300 Metres became unbalanced when crowded for room between PACIFIC ALLIANCE and UNITED which shifted out to obtain clear running. At the 200 Metres, GENERAL SMILE again became unbalanced when crowded for room between PACIFIC ALLIANCE and UNITED, both of which shifted ground. J Victoire (PACIFIC ALLIANCE) dropped his whip approaching the 100 Metres. As this was the 5th occasion that J Victoire had dropped his whip in a race this season, he was fined the sum of $5,000. SPLENDID CHAMPION was unable to obtain clear running until near the 50 Metres. In the Straight, ANIMATION (C Soumillon) hung in and near the 50 Metres was steadied away from the heels of SPARKLING. For this reason, C Soumillon was obliged to stop riding his mount for a number of strides before being able to recommence riding the horse out. Throughout the race, GOLD RUSH travelled wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of QUANTUM EXPRESS, Z Purton stated that the horse was able to take up a forward position as usual and travelled kindly for him in the early and middle stages. He said however QUANTUM EXPRESS came under pressure shortly after entering the Straight and was most disappointing in the manner in which weakened in the Straight. He said that when QUANTUM EXPRESS did weaken, the action of the horse deteriorated. Trainer K W Lui stated that although QUANTUM EXPRESS missed three days of work in mid-February due to a hoof complaint, its work since that time had been good and a forward showing was expected today. He stated that he was most disappointed with the manner in which QUANTUM EXPRESS gave ground in the Straight and particularly the fact that it weakened so badly. A veterinary inspection of QUANTUM EXPRESS after the race did not show any significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, QUANTUM EXPRESS will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of AMITYSHIP after the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of GOLD RUSH including an endoscopic examination after the race showed that there was a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse’s trachea. SPLENDID CHAMPION, SPARKING and GENERAL SMILE were sent for sampling.
