Racing Incident Report

SMART FORTUNE proved difficult to load. Before being allowed to race again, SMART FORTUNE will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. Just prior to the start being effected, CHEETAH BOY lunged in the barriers, resulting in the front gates opening marginally prior to the remaining gates. When caught wide and without cover after the 900 Metres, WINNING SCHOLAR proved difficult to settle when being steadied to obtain a position with cover behind WHAT A HEART. Making the first turn near the 700 Metres, WHAT A HEART got its head on the side and shifted out. When questioned regarding the performance of RIDE ON THE FIRE which was having its first race start on the All Weather surface today, M Du Plessis stated that RIDE ON THE FIRE was more worked up prior to the race than it was at its last start at Happy Valley when it performed well. He said that in the early stages he was left racing wide and as RIDE ON THE FIRE was travelling strongly at this time, he elected to allow the horse to continue forward to cross runners and obtain the lead on the fence. He said after reaching the lead, RIDE ON THE FIRE travelled comfortably albeit the horse was running quite quick sectionals. He added in the early part of the Straight CHEETAH BOY quickened past RIDE ON THE FIRE easily, however, he expected RIDE ON THE FIRE to race competitively in the Straight, however, the horse quickly came off the bridle and was disappointing in the manner in which it gave ground over the concluding stages. A veterinary inspection of RIDE ON THE FIRE after the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on WHAT A HEART at the request of Trainer C S Shum. The Veterinary Officer said that this examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. The performance of WHAT A HEART, which compounded in the Straight and finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, WHAT A HEART will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that SMART FORTUNE had lost its left front plate. CHEETAH BOY and CENTURY SUPER STAR were sent for sampling.
