Racing Incident Report

On arrival at the Start, the tongue tie applied to GRACEFUL KINGDOM was refitted. The Veterinary Surgeon reported that GRACEFUL KINGDOM, which had made contact with a rail when proceeding to the Start, was found to be suitable to race.
SPEEDYGONZALEZ began awkwardly and shortly after the start was crowded for room between JOYFUL LUCK and AMBITIOUS TREASURE which got its head on the side and shifted out.
SIGHT BELIEVER shifted in at the start and bumped DELIGHT FORTUNE.
BERLINI shifted out abruptly at the start and made contact with MAN AND MING which became unbalanced.
In the early stages, NO TIES got its head on the side, hung in and proved difficult to ride.
Making the first turn, BERLINI, which was travelling keenly, got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of RECORD AGAIN.
SMART UNION made the first turn after the 900 Metres awkwardly.
For some distance approaching and passing the 700 Metres, DYNAMIC VOYAGE got its head up when travelling keenly and close to the heels of SIGHT BELIEVER.
Approaching and passing the 600 Metres, SPEEDYGONZALEZ was awkwardly placed close to the heels of NO TIES.
FAY DEEP had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight.
In the early part of the Straight, NO TIES got its head on the side and hung in and approaching the 300 Metres was checked away from the heels of WINNAM. After this, NO TIES continued to race with its head on the side.
Throughout the race, WINNAM travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned, C O’Donoghue stated that, from the outside barrier, he had been asked to ride GRACEFUL KINGDOM quietly in the early stages and take the horse across behind runners. He said when he worked GRACEFUL KINGDOM in the lead up to today’s race, it did not carry blinkers and he was advised by Mr P F Yiu, the trainer of GRACEFUL KINGDOM, that the horse, which was resuming today, may over-race. He said in accordance with his instructions he shifted GRACEFUL KINGDOM across behind runners and after the 1000 Metres it proved very difficult to settle and over-raced. He said after the 900 Metres he attempted to get GRACEFUL KINGDOM to settle better, however, the horse continued to travel keenly and for this reason he was reluctant to allow his mount to make up ground to be on the back of SPEEDYGONZALEZ which was racing in advance of GRACEFUL KINGDOM. He added as the horse was travelling keenly, he felt it was in its best interests to have it race as comfortably as possible with a view to shifting out at the top of the Straight and having it close off the race. He said when he attempted to shift GRACEFUL KINGDOM out rounding the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight, the horse immediately commenced to hang in and despite his efforts proved reluctant to shift to the outside of SPEEDYGONZALEZ. He added it was not until approaching the 300 Metres that he was able to shift the horse out, however, GRACEFUL KINGDOM continued to hang in badly in the Straight and because of this he was obligated to use the whip in a restricted manner due to the horse’s racing manners. C O’Donoghue was advised that his explanation would be reported, however, in the opinion of the Stewards, he had allowed GRACEFUL KINGDOM to get too far out of its ground in the middle stages. He was further advised that he should have positioned GRACEFUL KINGDOM closer to SPEEDYGONZALEZ so as to be able to shift directly to the outside of that horse at the earliest opportunity. C O’Donoghue was advised to ensure that he does not set his mounts too great a task and to ride them in such a manner so as to leave no room for query.
After the race, the Veterinary Surgeon reported that an endoscopic examination was conducted on WINNAM at the request of Trainer T P Yung. The Veterinary Surgeon reported that this examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, WINNAM will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of GRACEFUL KINGDOM immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
SIGHT BELIEVER, DYNAMIC VOYAGE and FAY DEEP were sent for sampling.
