Racing Incident Report

HOSSEGOR jumped awkwardly. SPARTAN made the first turn awkwardly, got its head up when momentarily unbalanced on the heels of SPEED AT WILL. LEGEND'S GLORY was slowly away. In the middle stages, HEADING TO WIN was awkward behind MASCOT TREASURE (D Whyte) which shifted in when barely clear. D Whyte was told he must exercise care at all times when shifting ground. Approaching the rounding the turn, LYPHARD'S LAD hung out. Near the 400 Metres, BRAVO VICTORY was unbalanced when close to the heels of HEADING TO WIN. About 100 Metres out, Apprentice S K Sit (SPEED AT WILL) had the whip knocked from his head by the whip of E Legrix (LYPHARD'S LAD). When asked about the disappointing performance of MASCOT TREASURE, D Whyte said it was expected the horse would handle the All Weather Track and it was thought the horse would run well. He said MASCOT TREASURE travelled satisfactorily until about the 600 Metres, but shortly afterwards was well beaten, from the 400 Metres started to drop right out and approaching the winning post as he was concerned with the horse, he did not ride it out to the line as he normally would. The performance of MASCOT TREASURE in all the circumstances was considered by the Stewards to be unacceptable and before it can race again, it will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subject to an official veterinary examination. When questioned, Mr T W Leung, Trainer of SPEED AT WILL, said the horse had an unusual action both in its races and work. He said the horse had trialed only satisfactorily recently when ridden by the stable retained rider and he also discussed with him the horse's action and it was decided after that trial the horse would be ridden by a claiming Apprentice. Mr Leung said the horse had been looked at regularly by the Veterinary Surgeons since its last run and they were unable to find any significant abnormalities. He said going into tonight's race he was hoping the horse would finish off strongly and be competitive. The explanations submitted by Mr Leung were accepted. ME FIRST was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
