Racing Incident Report

On the way to the Start, Apprentice S K Sit was dislodged from HOLY RANTO. As a result of this, Apprentice S K Sit injured his left knee, was not able to take the ride. To avoid an unreasonable delay, HOLY RANTO was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. Subsequently Apprentice S K Sit was stood down from a further ride by the Club's doctor. WONDERFUL LIFE was slowly away. UNIVERSAL CHARGER missed the start slightly, shifted in and bumped SOUND LOVER. About the 800 Metres, UNIVERSAL CHARGER, which was awkward just inside the hindquarters of ZINEDINE, struck the running rail and became unbalanced. For some distance in the early part of the Straight, UNIVERSAL CHARGER was held up behind SIGHT FIRST and tight inside LUCKY VICTORIES. To obtain running, UNIVERSAL CHARGER was steadied and shifted to the outside of WINNING LUCK. UNIVERSAL CHARGER was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing. After the race, the Veterinary Surgeon examined UNIVERSAL CHARGER. He said the horse was lame in its off side front leg. Before being allowed to race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. At no stage in the Straight did SOUND LOVER obtain clear running. As a consequence of this, the horse was not properly tested out. M de Montfort (SIGHT FIRST) said today the connections had asked him to endeavour to ensure the horse began well, then as the racing pattern had been winners coming from up the front, he was instructed to ride SIGHT FIRST along in the early stages and take up a more forward position than has been the practice in the past. He said he was able to do this and ride SIGHT FIRST in a position just behind the leaders, but over the concluding stages the horse did not find the line. M de Montfort said following the race he did point out to the connections that SIGHT FIRST in his opinion may perform better when ridden quieter. F Coetzee (WONDERFUL LIFE) explained the horse, which was having its first race start today, had not been showing a lot on the track. He also pointed out that WONDERFUL LIFE is somewhat of a light-framed horse. He said WONDERFUL LIFE travelled in a rearward position, at about the 500 Metres when SMILING FOREST shifted from behind MILLENNIUM SPIRIT to try and go forward, he endeavoured to hold that horse in, but WONDERFUL LIFE was not travelling well enough at the time. He said to continue on the outside of SMILING FOREST would have meant he made the corner wide and without any cover on a horse having its first race start. He said as a consequence of SMILING FOREST shifting out after the 400 Metres, he finished up some 3 lengths behind that horse, he then came to the extreme outside and WONDERFUL LIFE finished the race off quite strongly. The explanations submitted by F Coetzee were on this occasion accepted.
