Racing Incident Report

HONG KONG VITALITY left the gates awkwardly and threw its head about. On jumping, UNIVERSAL STAR threw its head about, was then steadied, shifted across behind other runners to take up a position at the rear but close to the rail. In the early stages, RETURN A SMILE proved very difficult to settle and for some distance raced with its head in the air, then rounding the Home Turn hung out. As a consequence of this, DANEFACTOR obtained running on its inside. In the Straight, FULL THROTTLE hung out badly. At about the 200 Metres, GUSCOTT and RETURN A SMILE were checked and HARMONY PRINCE was crowded for room between HONG KONG VITALITY and WONDERFUL WINNERS (E Legrix) which shifted abruptly to the outside of SOUND GALLOP when that horse shifted out to avoid DANEFACTOR (G Mossé) which shifted in when not quite clear. Because of all the circumstances that were involved, the Stewards were not able to attribute responsibility for the crowding to any one rider or riders and therefore they decided not to take any direct action, however, G Mossé was told he must exercise far more care when shifting ground. Similarly, E Legrix was told he must do all he can to avoid a repetition of such crowding occurring. When questioned, S King (COGITO) said tonight the Trainer had instructed him that from a difficult gate he was to ride the horse somewhere about 5th to 6th position if possible. It was also thought that the horse should be ridden a little more forward tonight as they did not think there would be a lot of pace in the race. S King said COGITO left the gates well, went forward and then endeavoured to find a position somewhere about the middle as instructed, but was unable to do so and in the circumstances he felt he had little alternative but to allow COGITO to run along and take up a position outside TURBOJET which led. The explanations tendered by S King were on this occasion accepted. Apprentice Y T Cheng (HIDDEN TALENT) said tonight it was the first time he had ridden the horse. He had been instructed by the Trainer from a good gate to ensure the horse was well warmed up before being boxed as it has had a tendency of missing the start. He said accordingly he gave the horse a good preliminary, then when the gates opened, HIDDEN TALENT left cleanly, took up a position in about 4th or 5th as instructed. The Stewards intend to discuss the riding instructions for HIDDEN TALENT with Mr J Moore, Trainer of the horse, on Saturday at Sha Tin.
