Racing Incident Report

About the 200 Metres, J Egan (HANDOVER) dropped his whip. The Stewards allowed Mr A S Cruz, Trainer of SUPER CENTURY, an opportunity of explaining the horse's improved run tonight when compared with its recent form. Mr Cruz said SUPER CENTURY had won three times in New Zealand on rain affected ground and had previously been successful at Happy Valley. He said the horse had been ridden in front, but was disappointing and at its previous run over 1600 Metres from an outside gate it was decided to ride the horse back in an endeavour to have it finish the race off. He said however that was an unsuccessful experiment and tonight from an outside gate and with the track favouring those near the rail and in front, it was decided to go forward with SUPER CENTURY. Mr Cruz assured the Stewards there had not been any significant change in the manner in which the horse had been worked and it went into tonight's race as well as it had done previously. He said he did anticipate that SUPER CENTURY would run better on the rain affected going tonight. The explanations on this occasion from Mr Cruz were recorded. D Whyte (RED IN GREEN) said after the 1000 Metres the horse stumbled, started to give ground and he was concerned that something was amiss with RED IN GREEN. He said in the Straight when easing the horse down it continued to stumble and he was convinced it had broken down. After the race, the Veterinary Surgeon said RED IN GREEN was showing signs of having a heart irregularity. Before being allowed to race again, RED IN GREEN will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will also be subjected to an official veterinary examination. RED IN GREEN was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing. The Stewards will seek an explanation from S Dye (STINGER) for having weighed out without a girth.
