Racing Incident Report

TOM'S FIRST was slowly away. About the 600 Metres, ALWAYS ON and SPRING FOUNTAIN came together. Throughout the race, SENSIBLE WAY hung in and at about the 600 Metres struck the running rail. Rounding the Home Turn, CLASSIC JESTER was inconvenienced and taken wider by DASHING WINNER which was hanging out. About right on the winning post, CLASSIC JESTER was inconvenienced by POT BLACK which was taken in by GOOD FRIENDS. K S Yu (ONE STEP AHEAD) explained after being boxed the horse was restless and he sought the assistance of a barrier attendant. He said ONE STEP AHEAD left the gates satisfactorily, but then immediately put its head down, was not able to go the early speed of the race and got further back than hoped. He said rounding the Home Turn he was awkwardly placed on the heels of TELECOM BABE, he shifted out to try and find running between that horse and SPRING FOUNTAIN, was unable to go forward and on straightening shifted in abruptly and obtained a clear run to the line. When asked about the disappointing performance of DASHING WINNER, E Legrix said the horse can be difficult at the start, but tonight left the gates well and took up a position outside BULLISH. He said DASHING WINNER travelled well in a forward position until just before straightening where the horse hung out rather badly as it has done in the past. He said then in the Straight DASHING WINNER was badly unbalanced, did not respond to his riding and was very disappointing. He did go on to say the intention of the stable had been to trial DASHING WINNER at Happy Valley on 1 September 2001, but when these trials were cancelled the plan was to trial the horse at Happy Valley on 7 September 2001, but again the horse missed the trial due to cancellation. E Legrix was of the view this may have had a bearing on the disappointing run tonight. DASHING WINNER was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
