Racing Incident Report

CHAMPION BOY was slowly away. ACTIVE ACCOUNT left the gates awkwardly. ENERGETIC PRINCE left the gates awkwardly, because of this K H Ting bumped the side of the gates and momentarily lost the use of his near side stirrup iron. In the early part of the Straight, TEKON PERFECT shifted out and bumped EASY STAR which was giving ground. The performance of INDY'S GEM, a last start winner at Happy Valley on a rain affected track, was considered unacceptable. Before the horse can race again, it must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. A Marcus (CHAMPION BOY) explained the horse left the gates satisfactorily, but at about the 1200 Metres became unbalanced for no apparent reason, he eased the horse down and shortly after this CHAMPION BOY again lost its action. He said after this he shifted the horse to the extreme outside away from other runners and thereafter it travelled satisfactorily. Mr L Fownes, trainer of CHAMPION BOY, said the horse had trialed recently in pacifier and in his opinion this trial was quite satisfactory. He acknowledged the manner in which CHAMPION BOY has been performing in recent runs is of concern and did say the horse would not be racing again this season and next season he will restrict its racing to day meetings in an endeavour to rectify the horse's racing problems. On this assurance from Mr Fownes, it was decided at this time no further action would be taken. Mr G Lane, trainer of SUGAR AND SPICE said the horse's recent runs on the All Weather Track has in his opinion been promising, however, before tonight's race the owner of the horse did indicate should it not perform well this evening, he was considering retiring SUGAR AND SPICE. Mr Lane said when studying the race, he became aware the possible leader had drawn immediate inside of his horse and he asked F Coetzee to try and follow it across if possible. He said the manner in which the race was run worked out ideally for SUGAR AND SPICE. He did say had the horse drawn towards the inside, he would have requested it be ridden about midfield, but because of the draw he did anticipate SUGAR AND SPICE would be further forward this evening. The explanations submitted by Mr Lane were accepted. WAIALAE WIN and INDY'S GEM were sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing. After the race, the Veterinary Surgeon reported that TEKON PERFECT had sustained a laceration to the lower part of its near side hind leg. Also after the race, it was noted SUGAR AND SPICE had spread both hind plates.
