Racing Incident Report

PEARL AND GOLD was slow to begin. HAPPY CHAMP was a little slow to begin, then shortly afterwards was steadied when crowded for room between DIVINE FEELING and BUENO BUENO, both of which shifted ground. From the outside barrier, DIVINE FEELING was steadied and shifted across behind runners close to the rail. J Spencer (YACHT MASTER) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that at the 1400 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of UNIVERSAL GLORY, causing that horse to be taken in which in turn caused crowding on its inside to BRAVISSIMO and NATIVE LANGUAGE, both of which as a result lost their rightful running and checked. J Spencer's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday 26 January 2003 and expire on Monday 17 February 2003 on which day he may resume race riding (4 Hong Kong race days). It should be noted this suspension commences at the expiration of the suspension incurred by J Spencer at the Sha Tin meeting on 11 January 2003. In the early and middle stages, UNIVERSAL GLORY, which had been ridden forward from an awkward gate, was obliged to race wide and without cover. After the 600 Metres, FAST LANE commenced to give ground and hang out. At about the 500 Metres, FAST LANE, which was continuing to hang out, shifted ground and was steadied away from the heels of BRAVISSIMO. CHERISHED, which was following, was inconvenienced. The performance of FAST LANE, which tailed off, was considered unacceptable. Before the horse will be permitted to race again, it must perform competitively in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. In the early part of the Straight, HAPPY CHAMP had some difficulty obtaining clear running. For some distance after straightening, NATIVE LANGUAGE was held up and unable to obtain clear running when behind NAMJONG HEART and to the inside of UNIVERSAL GLORY. At the 200 Metres, to obtain clear running, NATIVE LANGUAGE shifted to the outside of NAMJONG HEART and in doing so bumped UNIVERSAL GLORY. J Spencer was reprimanded for a celebratory gesture prior to the finishing line. He was told he should curtail this at least until after the winning post. NATIVE LANGUAGE, YACHT MASTER and BUENO BUENO were sent for sampling.
