Racing Incident Report

TEA FOR CHAMP was withdrawn on 15.4.03 on veterinary grounds (inappetence) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter WIN HUNTER (G Schofield). Before being permitted to race again, TEA FOR CHAMP will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. While being paraded, ILIKETOSMILE shifted its right fore plate. This plate was reset before the horse left the Parade Ring. ILIKETOSMILE was examined by the Veterinary Officer and considered suitable to race. ACME OF SURPRISE began awkwardly. CENDAMY was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, WIN HUNTER and MAXIMUM JOY bumped. Shortly after this, WIN HUNTER was checked when crowded between MAXIMUM JOY and ELVIS which got its head on the side and shifted out. In the early stages, ACME OF SURPRISE was obliged to race wide and without cover, near the 700 Metres got its head on the side, shifted in and was steadied away from the heels of MAXIMUM JOY which itself was hanging out. Making the turn at the 700 Metres, CENDAMY got its head on the side, shifted in, bumped the running rail and as a result became badly unbalanced. At the 600 Metres, ELVIS was momentarily steadied when crowded for room between ILIKETOSMILE and CENDAMY which shifted out slightly. Shortly after straightening, MULTI-WIN was steadied and shifted out away from the heels of WIN HUNTER. Near the 200 Metres, WIN HUNTER was steadied when momentarily disappointed for running between FOR YOUR EYES ONLY and FAT CHOY TREASURE. As the Judge had called for a photo to decide the 3rd placegetter of this race, the Stewards felt it appropriate to post the inquiry sign to consider whether MULTI-WIN had been denied a fair start before the Judge's numbers were semaphored for 3rd. After examining the photo finish, the Judge officially placed MULTI-WIN as 3rd placegetter and as such the provisions of Rule 12(19) became effective, that being that a horse which is declared 1st, 2nd or 3rd in a race shall not be declared a non-runner even if it has had an unfair start. Therefore the Judge's placings as semaphored were confirmed. It was established that as the Starter effected the start, MULTI-WIN, which had been fractious and was being held by an attendant, reared, broke open its gates and as a consequence lost a significant amount of ground. The Stewards would like to point out regardless of the provisions of Rule 12(19), in these circumstances MULTI-WIN would not have been considered to have had an unfair start. Before being permitted to race again, MULTI-WIN will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. ACME OF SURPRISE and CENDAMY were sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, CENDAMY, which had performed poorly, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was displaying a heart irregularity. Before being permitted to race again, CENDAMY will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of ACME OF SURPRISE after the race did not show any significant findings. MAXIMUM JOY, GO GET THEM and WIN HUNTER were sent for sampling.
