Racing Incident Report

On leaving the Parade Ring, SANBENITO made contact with a gate. After arriving at the Start, the horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. OPERA MAGIC and HIGH SKY were slow to begin. WYNDAM EASY was slow to begin, was then ridden for a short distance to improve its position, commenced to over-race badly and at the 1200 Metres shifted in away from TRUST ME, causing FLORAL DYNAMITE to be severely crowded for room and checked. In the circumstances, no action was taken. For some distance after this, WYNDAM EASY raced with its head on the side and hung in. In the early stages, SANBENITO proved difficult to settle and got its head up. The Stewards allowed Trainer C H Yip an opportunity of explaining the improved performance of ONE MORE ROUND which was having its second start since joining his stable today. Mr Yip said last start at Happy Valley whilst the track was rated yielding, the same classification as today's track, he had instructed K S Yu to lead if possible on the horse or ride in a forward position. He said on that occasion despite the riding of K S Yu, ONE MORE ROUND failed to muster sufficient pace to race in the lead, was obliged to race wide throughout and was carried even wider making the Home Turn. He said following the race Jockey Yu explained to him in his opinion ONE MORE ROUND did not handle the track conditions on that night. Mr Yip said subsequently the horse had been ridden in work by A Marcus who had informed him the horse seemed to have a short action in front. He said today from the outside barrier he had instructed A Marcus to try and clear runners on his inside and cross to the lead if possible. He said when A Marcus was able to do this and dictate terms in front, ONE MORE ROUND appeared to appreciate being ridden in this manner. Mr Yip said there had been nothing to cause him concern with ONE MORE ROUND since it had joined his stable and he had not varied the horse's work at all. Mr Yip concluded by saying he believed ONE MORE ROUND appreciated racing in the lead. LUCKY STALLION and OPERA MAGIC and was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, LUCKY STALLION was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. Following the race, OPERA MAGIC, which had travelled wide throughout, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said there were no significant findings. ONE MORE ROUND and FLORAL DYNAMITE were sent for sampling. After the race, SANBENITO was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, SANBENITO will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 24 June 2003) :
After the race, OPERA MAGIC was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said at that time there were no significant findings. OPERA MAGIC was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer P C Kan yesterday and at this time was noted to be stiff behind and displaying significant rump muscle soreness. Before being allowed to race again, OPERA MAGIC will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
