Racing Incident Report

TURF LUCK was withdrawn on 20.3.04 on veterinary grounds (left fore suspensory ligament injury) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter PRODIGY. Before being allowed to race again, TURF LUCK will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. CHERISHED was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, LIGHT FOOT was checked when crowded for room between BOUNTIFUL and OH GREAT which on jumping shifted in abruptly. Also shortly after the start, PRODIGY and SHENANEGAN were steadied when crowded for room between BOUNTIFUL and TREASURE FIELD which on jumping shifted out. In the early stages, SOLAR raced wide and without cover and after the 800 Metres was allowed to stride forward to join the lead. At the 1700 Metres, BOUNTIFUL and OH GREAT bumped. After the 1600 Metres, BOUNTIFUL, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of NOBLE ZOOM which was shifting in. In the circumstances, no action was taken. After this, BOUNTIFUL continued to prove difficult to settle and again got its head up near the 1200 Metres and 800 Metres. At the 1400 Metres, SHENANEGAN was steadied away from the heels of BOUNTIFUL. Also at the 1400 Metres, TREASURE FIELD, which was proving difficult to settle, was steadied to avoid the heels of NOBLE ZOOM (D Oliver) which when being shifted across to the fence in the lead was being steadied. D Oliver was told in similar circumstances he would be expected to allow his mount to roll forward to avoid causing interference to runners following him. For some distance approaching and passing the 300 Metres, BOUNTIFUL raced in restricted room when endeavouring to improve on the outside of CLAWS OF THUNDER and tight inside OH GREAT. Near the 250 Metres, OH GREAT was hampered and shifted wider after being bumped by BOUNTIFUL which when being checked to avoid the heels of CLAWS OF THUNDER shifted out. In this incident, CLAWS OF THUNDER shifted out away from TREASURE FIELD which in turn was carried out by SOLAR which after initially being carried out by NOBLE ZOOM shifted further away from that horse. In the circumstances, no action was taken. Near the 200 Metres, CHERISHED was awkwardly placed close to the heels of BOUNTIFUL. After the 100 Metres, CHERISHED, which was closing the race off fairly, was checked when disappointed for running between FLYING DRAGON which was giving ground and SOLAR which got its head on the side and shifted in. Over the concluding stages, CLAWS OF THUNDER hung in. Throughout the race, BIEN BIEN HEART raced wide and without cover. D Dunn (GREAT SENSATION) said he had intended to ride the horse in a rearward position as is usual, however, because of the manner in which the race was run in the early stages, he travelled into a forward position without making any use of the horse. He said after the 600 Metres when SOLAR improved around his outside, GREAT SENSATION immediately came under pressure and failed to respond to his riding. He said with the benefit of hindsight GREAT SENSATION is best suited ridden in a rearward position and saved for a late run regardless of the manner in which the race is being run. BOUNTIFUL was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. GREAT SENSATION was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of BOUNTIFUL and GREAT SENSATION after the race did not show any significant findings. SHENANEGAN and TREASURE FIELD were sent for sampling. The Veterinary Officer reported after the race OH GREAT was distressed.
