Racing Incident Report

FABULOUS was slow to begin. HIGH SPIRITS was hard ridden in the early stages to go forward, failed to muster speed, then raced wide and without cover throughout. Making the turn near the 1200 Metres, STOIC, which had been racing wide and without cover, was allowed to stride forward and cross to race outside the leader. Making the Home Turn, SALUZI bumped the running rail and became unbalanced. Near the 150 Metres, WAIALAE WIN, which was giving ground, was steadied when crowded for room between HIGH SPIRITS and THE RICH MAN which was carried out by FABULOUS (W Woods). W Woods was advised to exercise care. M Zahra (SUNDAY DELIGHT) said he was not issued with firm riding instructions, but was told to allow the horse to travel where it was comfortable. He said he anticipated this would be in front of midfield. He said SUNDAY DELIGHT began fairly from an awkward gate, he rode it along for a short distance, however, it soon became apparent to him he would be obliged to race wide, therefore he elected near the 1600 Metres to steady his mount and shift across behind runners to race with cover, however, this meant racing further back than he had intended. The explanation of M Zahra was recorded. HIGH SPIRITS was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of HIGH SPIRITS after the race did not show any significant findings. RISING WIN and TRIUMPH were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 22 April 2004)
HIGH SPIRITS, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. HIGH SPIRITS was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer A S Cruz this morning. He said at this time the horse was found to be lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, HIGH SPIRITS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
