Racing Incident Report

MEDIC CORPS, which was fractious after being boxed, bounded in the air as the gates opened and lost ground. DENDRANTHEMA LOVE was slow to begin. After the 1000 Metres, THE DUKE, which was proving very difficult to settle, got its head up on a number of occasions. D Dunn (WINTROW) said he had been instructed to ride the horse behind midfield if possible as it was felt today's racing pattern suited horses making ground from back in the field. He said WINTROW began well, he immediately steadied the horse and for a short distance the horse's action did not feel right. He said however WINTROW travelled kindly in the run outside MEDIC CORPS and behind PALETTE NATURAL, but because of the tempo of today's race the horse did not finish the race off as hoped. The explanation of D Dunn was accepted. A Marcus (GOLCONDA) said he had been instructed if the horse began well and showed necessary pace he should lead, otherwise he should endeavour to obtain the best possible position. He said GOLCONDA began well, however, THE DUKE which had drawn to his inside immediately showed superior speed, so he elected to follow that horse across and obtain cover behind it as in his opinion he would have had to make too much use of GOLCONDA to lead. He said after obtaining cover behind THE DUKE, GOLCONDA relaxed nicely and enjoyed a good run. When questioned regarding his riding particularly in the Home Straight, Apprentice K T Yeung (CLEMENT SUPREME) said he had been instructed to ride the horse which was having its first start today from a spell in a rearward position and to endeavour to improve his position from about the 600 Metres. He said in accordance with those instructions he immediately allowed CLEMENT SUPREME to settle at the rear of the field and near the 600 Metres he endeavoured to get on the back of WINTROW, then in the Straight he shifted his mount to the outside into clear running. He said after the 400 Metres CLEMENT SUPREME commenced to hang in and because of this he endeavoured to pull the whip through into his right hand, this however took him some distance as he had difficulty doing so. He said after the 200 Metres he hit CLEMENT SUPREME on two occasions with the whip, however, the horse continued to hang in and he was concerned it would shift in, race close to the heels of WINTROW and cause inconvenience to MEDIC CORPS which was racing to his inside, he therefore put the whip away in an endeavour to balance CLEMENT SUPREME. Mr A Lee, assistant trainer to Trainer D A Hayes, confirmed the riding instructions issued to Apprentice K T Yeung. Apprentice K T Yeung was told his riding had come under notice. He was severely reprimanded and advised where circumstances permit he should ensure all mounts ridden by him are properly tested. Mr Lee was told he should ensure when issuing instructions particularly to apprentice jockeys that they are told all horses should be fully tested. CLEMENT SUPREME was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, CLEMENT SUPREME was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings. RED SUN, which tailed out, was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of RED SUN after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of RED SUN was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, RED SUN will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. PALETTE NATURAL, FIGURES and GEM OF INDIA were sent for sampling. After the race, MEDIC CORPS was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had sustained a laceration to the tongue and an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, MEDIC CORPS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
