Racing Incident Report

While being paraded, BARAKA shifted the right front plate. This plate was re-set. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer and considered suitable to race. After arriving at the barrier, G Schofield expressed concern with the action of GOODWOOD. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was lame in the left hind leg. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of GOODWOOD. Following the race, GOODWOOD was again examined by the Veterinary Officer and he said at this time the horse appeared normal in its action. FAT CHANCE was slow to begin. SPLIT SECONDS began awkwardly and bumped the outside gate of its stall. In the middle stages, SPLIT SECONDS proved very difficult to settle and near the 1100 Metres got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of COMME D'HABITUDE. On straightening, SMART HORSE was steadied and shifted to the inside of HOLY QUEST to obtain clear running. At the 300 Metres, SPLIT SECONDS, which was giving ground, became unbalanced after being bumped by THISTLEJADE which shifted out when improving. Near the 200 Metres, SERIOUS PLAY was steadied away from the heels of COMME D'HABITUDE which shifted out. For the major part of the race, GOOD WIN raced wide and without cover. C Williams (FREEBIRD) explained the horse, which had a prior history of hanging, tonight from the outside barrier began well, he rode along in the early stages, the horse then making the turn commenced to hang out badly and he was unable to bring it across to race outside other horses. He said in the Back Straight he was able to gradually shift FREEBIRD a little closer to other runners, however, making the turn after the 700 Metres the horse again hung out, proved very difficult to ride and in the Straight gave ground. He said in his opinion the changes to the gear in which FREEBIRD raced tonight had an adverse effect on the horse's behaviour. The Stewards advised Mr Y W Ho, assistant trainer to Mr D Cruz, that before being permitted to race again, FREEBIRD will have to trial satisfactorily on two successive occasions around a bend and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. F Coetzee (SPLIT SECONDS) said the horse was slow to begin, he allowed it to travel forward in the early stages as in his opinion there was a more favourable position available for him without having to make use of the horse. He said passing the 1300 Metres SPLIT SECONDS commenced to over-race, proved very difficult to settle in the middle stages and as a result of this did not finish the race off. SPLIT SECONDS was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of SPLIT SECONDS after the race did not show any significant findings. FREEBIRD and STRATEGIC SELECT were sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of FREEBIRD and STRATEGIC SELECT after the race did not show any significant findings. THISTLEJADE and COMME D'HABITUDE were sent for sampling.
