Racing Incident Report

DASH AHEAD was slow to begin. On jumping, PACIFIC ALLIANCE and LUCKY CHAMPION bumped. In the early stages, CHINSOLA proved difficult to settle. Near the 1100 Metres, LUCKY SIXER was momentarily crowded for room inside PACIFIC ALLIANCE. On straightening, WIND WINNER was shifted out in an endeavour to obtain clear running between CHINSOLA and LUCKY KING. WIND WINNER was disappointed for this run, steadied and shifted back in to go forward. Also on straightening, DASHING THUNDER was steadied away from the heels of LUCKY CHAMPION. G Schofield (LUCKY KING) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that after the 300 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of CHINSOLA, causing that horse to lose its rightful running, clip the heels of LUCKY KING and blunder. DASHING THUNDER, which was racing to the inside of CHINSOLA, was hampered in this incident. In the circumstances of this case, G Schofield was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Sunday 26 September 2004 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of that suspension is deferred until after the Happy Valley racemeeting next Wednesday 15 September 2004. In addition, G Schofield was fined $35,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating one further raceday. Just prior to the winning post, LUCKY CHAMPION was awkwardly placed close to the heels of WIND WINNER and therefore was not ridden out to the winning post as it normally would be. B Doyle (SMART HORSE) said the intention had been to ride the horse in a rearward position. He said SMART HORSE began well, he immediately steadied in an attempt to find a position with cover, however, from the outside gate was unable to do so, he therefore at the 1400 Metres allowed his mount to stride forward in the hope that it would be able to obtain a more favourable position. He said LUCKY CHAMPION, which had drawn to his inside, went forward with him at this time and he rode along in an endeavour to clear that horse in the hope of obtaining a position two wide. He said at the 1000 Metres he had cleared LUCKY CHAMPION, however, was racing outside the heels of PACIFIC ALLIANCE whose rider was attempting to steady the tempo of the race. He said he did not think it would be in his best interest to obtain a position behind that horse because of the manner in which it was being ridden, he therefore continued to race three wide. B Doyle was told in the opinion of the Stewards this was not one of his better rides and lacked the judgement expected from a rider of his experience. He was also told he should show more initiative and judgement than he did on this occasion. LUCKY SIXER was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of LUCKY SIXER after the race did not show any significant findings. WIND WINNER, SEASONS TREASURE and LUCKY KING were sent for sampling.
