Racing Incident Report
OLIVE OR TWIST was withdrawn on 9.11.04 on veterinary grounds (right fore infection) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter JOY TRUMPS (F Coetzee). Before being allowed to race again, OLIVE OR TWIST will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. On jumping, MADE IN HONGKONG stumbled. TUSITALA and FORTUNE DANCER were slow to begin. Near the 1500 Metres, FLORAL DANCER was momentarily steadied away from the heels of JUST IN TIME which shifted in when barely clear. Making the first turn, MAXIMUM JOY, which was racing wide and without cover, hung in. After the 1400 Metres, FORTUNE DANCER raced tight inside CUPID. For some distance approaching the 700 Metres, JUST IN TIME was awkwardly placed inside the heels of STAR OF NORTHERN. Making the turn at the 700 Metres, NOBLE WIND became unbalanced when awkwardly placed inside the hindquarters of FLORAL DANCER. FORTUNE DANCER, which was following, was steadied as a result. At the 500 Metres, FLORAL DANCER was bumped by NOBLE WIND which endeavoured to shift to the outside of SHOW BRAVELY. Near the 400 Metres, SHOW BRAVELY was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of MADE IN HONGKONG. Just prior to straightening, FORTUNE DANCER was shifted out in an attempt to find clear running on the outside of WE'RE BUDDIES which also shifted ground at this time. As a result of FORTUNE DANCER shifting out, it made contact on several occasions with BOUNTIFUL, causing both horses to become unbalanced. For some distance after the 300 Metres, FLORAL DANCER was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of MAXIMUM JOY which at this time was giving ground. Over the concluding stages, SHOW BRAVELY hung in. When questioned regarding the improved performance of JUST IN TIME, Trainer K W Lui said he was unable to offer any explanation. He said JUST IN TIME's fitness has improved as a result of recent racing and he elected to use a 10 lb claiming apprentice to reduce the horse's weight. He did also point out the horse had had a change of bit for tonight's race, however, he was not sure what significance this had. Mr Lui said JUST IN TIME was not fancied by the stable. S Dye (NOBLE WIND) said the intention had been to ride the horse behind the leaders. He said however NOBLE WIND began only fairly, he then rode along for a short distance, but runners drawn to his inside showed superior speed, he therefore elected to steady and come back to find a position on the rail. He said he was able to do this, but as a consequence raced much further back than was anticipated. He said NOBLE WIND travelled comfortably throughout the race and gave him the feeling at the 600 Metres that it would figure prominently in the finish of the race, however, shortly after this when he asked NOBLE WIND to improve, the horse did not respond to his riding and after the race was making a significant breathing noise. NOBLE WIND was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. After the race, NOBLE WIND was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had bled from both nostrils. JUST IN TIME and FORTUNE DANCER were sent for sampling.
