Racing Incident Report

SMARTY began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped MASTER ABLE. TIMBER CITY was slow to muster speed. Near the 1300 Metres, VITAL PATROL was steadied away from the heels of TOP SCORER which shifted in momentarily when not properly clear. On straightening, VITAL PATROL was carried wider by MASTER ABLE which at this time shifted to the outside of SUPER HONEY into clear running. Over the concluding stages, VITAL PATROL hung in. When questioned regarding his riding in the Straight, G Schofield (MR BEAUTIFUL) said prior to straightening he had shifted away from the fence, however, there was not an opportunity for him to continue outwards to find running, he therefore remained on the inside. He said after the 400 Metres he hit MR BEAUTIFUL with the whip as it improved into running towards the inside of TIMBER CITY which at this time moved away from the rail. He said approaching the 200 Metres he continued to ride MR BEAUTIFUL along and whilst the horse was closing the race off strongly, he after the 200 Metres shifted out away from horses on his inside which were giving ground. He said after the 100 Metres he momentarily steadied and shifted out again away from the heels of LEGIONNAIRE and was then able to ride MR BEAUTIFUL out fully with the horse responding strongly. G Schofield was told his explanation would be reported, but he should ensure he rides his mounts out in a manner which is not open to query. Y T Cheng (BARAKA) explained from the outside barrier he had today been asked to ride the horse in a rearward position. He said in accordance with those instructions he allowed BARAKA to come back after the start, however, he was not able to shift to the fence and remained racing three wide. He said prior to straightening he rode BARAKA along hands and heels in an endeavour to have the horse improve, but it did not immediately quicken. He said he continued to ride BARAKA along hands and heels and it commenced to make ground on the field in the run to the 200 Metres when he momentarily steadied and shifted out away from VITAL PATROL which was giving ground. He said after this he continued to ride BARAKA along and the horse continued to close the race off nicely. Y T Cheng was told his explanation would be reported, however, he was where circumstances permit to ensure mounts ridden by him were properly tested. FIGS and BARAKA were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of FIGS and BARAKA after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of FIGS, which tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, FIGS will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SUPER HONEY, MASTER ABLE and GOLD SANDFIELD were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported MASTER ABLE had sustained a laceration to the left hind pastern.
