Racing Incident Report

FRUITY FRUITY from a wide gate was slow to begin, immediately shifted across behind runners to a position on the rail and near the 1600 Metres was steadied when awkwardly placed inside EQUATOR KID. NORTHERNER was slow to begin and in the early stages proved difficult to settle. After the 1300 Metres, MONEY STRONG was steadied away from the heels of MR COOL which shifted in when barely clear. At the 1300 Metres, EQUATOR KID got its head up and shifted out abruptly. Near the 1000 Metres, NORTHERNER got its head up and shifted out away from the heels of FAMOUS DANCER. At the 700 Metres, NORTHERNER got its head up and shifted out when being steadied away from the heels of FAMOUS DANCER. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, MASTERY lost its running and was steadied when crowded for room between MILLENNIUM SPIRIT and FAMOUS DANCER which was carried wider by MIGHTY HUGO (D Whyte) which shifted out away from the heels of MONEY STRONG. D Whyte was reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he would be expected to exercise greater care. EQUATOR KID and DASHING THUNDER, which were following MIGHTY HUGO, were steadied in consequence. At the 500 Metres, FAMOUS DANCER and MIGHTY HUGO bumped as MIGHTY HUGO was awkwardly placed close to the heels of WINNING KEVIN. After this, MIGHTY HUGO remained held up and unable to improve behind WINNING KEVIN and inside FAMOUS DANCER until straightening. Approaching the 200 Metres, DASHING THUNDER was held up and unable to improve between MR COOL and MONEY STRONG. Throughout the race, MILLENNIUM SPIRIT raced wide and without cover. When questioned regarding his failure to endeavour to maintain the lead turning out of the Straight on the first occasion, A Delpech (MONEY STRONG) said after having ridden along from the barriers to obtain a position on the fence in the lead in the early stages, MR COOL then raced to his outside. He said the manner in which MR COOL was being ridden indicated to him that the horse was going to be pressured to ensure it obtained the lead, therefore after passing the winning post on the first occasion he elected to allow MR COOL to cross and lead on the fence in front of him. He said after this happened MR COOL steadied the pace in front which did not suit MONEY STRONG. Mr Y W Ho, assistant trainer to Mr D Cruz, trainer of MONEY STRONG, said Mr Cruz had spoken with A Delpech this morning and advised him to ride his own race on the horse as he has ridden it previously. A Delpech was told in the opinion of the Stewards, having in mind they had previously been informed by Mr Cruz that MONEY STRONG performed best when leading, he had erred by not attempting to maintain his position for longer than he did in the early stages. MONEY STRONG was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of MONEY STRONG after the race did not show any significant findings. MIGHTY HUGO, FAMOUS DANCER and WINNING DEVIN were sent for sampling.
