Racing Incident Report
As the gates opened, KINGIFLY sat back, was slow to begin and then shortly afterwards lost further ground as a result of being checked when crowded for room between CLASSIC NAVIGATOR and CHEERFUL MASTER, both of which shifted ground. TRIUMPHANT UNICORN, which was restless in its stall, began awkwardly. REGENCY HORSE began awkwardly, bumped the outside gate of its stall, then shifted further and made contact with GOLDEN CARE. FIRM OFFER began awkwardly and as a consequence lost ground. At the 800 Metres, FLYING GENERAL was momentarily steadied away from the heels of REGENCY HORSE. At the 600 Metres, KINGIFLY, which for some distance had been racing ungenerously when close to the heels of ABLE CHOICE, was checked when ABLE CHOICE shifted in after making contact with GLOBAL WIN. No action was taken. At the 300 Metres, CLASSIC NAVIGATOR, which had been held up and unable to improve, was steadied when disappointed for running between JOLLY GAINS and FLYING GENERAL, both of which shifted ground. After this, CLASSIC NAVIGATOR was shifted to the outside of FLYING GENERAL into clear running. When questioned regarding his riding in the Straight, M W Leung (GOLDEN CARE) said the horse had raced in a rearward position from an awkward barrier. He said shortly after straightening he started to ride GOLDEN CARE along, however, the horse commenced to hang in and near the 300 Metres was awkwardly placed outside the heels of GENERAL KINGY. He said when GOLDEN CARE got to the outside of GENERAL KINGY, he rode along vigorously hands and heels and the horse responded, however, it did continue to hang in and after the 100 Metres hung in badly. He said at this time he changed the whip into his right hand and rode the horse along in an endeavour to straighten it. He did say the run of GOLDEN CARE in his opinion ended about 30 Metres from the finish. M W Leung was told his riding in the Straight had come under notice and whilst the Stewards accepted GOLDEN CARE was hanging in, he should have changed the whip into his right hand sooner than he did on this occasion. He was also told to ensure he rides his mounts in a manner which is not open to query. When questioned, Apprentice C K Tong (KINGIFLY) said his mount was interfered with at the start and again at the 600 Metres. He said after straightening he ensured KINGIFLY was properly balanced, then near the 300 Metres commenced to improve his position. He said after the 200 Metres KINGIFLY was only finishing the race off fairly when being ridden with the whip and near the 100 Metres he became concerned with the action of the horse and because he was close to the heels of GLOBAL WIN which at this time was shifting in, he did not ride his mount out to the end of the race. Apprentice Tong did say he had been advised by Mr D Oughton, trainer of the horse, that KINGIFLY was best when saved for a finishing effort of around 300 Metres. Apprentice Tong was severely reprimanded and told his riding in the Straight had been of concern to the Stewards and he must at all times ride his mounts in a manner which is not open to query. JOLLY GAINS and KINGIFLY were sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, JOLLY GAINS was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, JOLLY GAINS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of KINGIFLY after the race did not show any significant findings. Also after the race, the Veterinary Officer reported an endoscopic examination was conducted on CHEERFUL MASTER at the request of the trainer. He said this showed a significant amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, CHEERFUL MASTER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. REGENCY HORSE and FIRM OFFER were sent for sampling.
