Racing Incident Report

BOREAS, MR BEAUTIFUL and DANRIVA were slow to begin. SPARKLE bounded in the air at the start and lost ground. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, HIGH PRICE was steadied away from the heels of VINCERE which shifted in when not properly clear. At the 1300 Metres, ROCKET WIN was steadied when crowded for room inside HIGH PRICE which itself was steadied when crowded for room inside G-ONE LEADING. No action was taken. At the 1100 Metres, HIGH PRICE was checked and ROCKET WIN crowded for room inside G-ONE LEADING (W M Lai) which shifted in slightly. W M Lai was severely reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he should exercise greater care. Near the 800 Metres, HIGH PRICE was steadied away from the heels of G-ONE LEADING and then shortly after straightening was steadied and shifted in away from the heels of TRAVEL LEADER which at this time was giving ground. At the 200 Metres, when under pressure, BOREAS got its head on the side and shifted out. Because of this, S Dye, its rider, stopped riding and straightened his mount. After the 100 Metres, BOREAS was then shifted out away from the heels of CHINOOK which was giving ground. Throughout the race, when racing wide and without cover, TRAVEL LEADER hung in and in the Straight gave ground. TRAVEL LEADER was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, TRAVEL LEADER was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said it had blood present at its right nostril. An endoscopic examination showed the horse's trachea to be clean and as such it was deemed not to have bled. Before being allowed to race again, TRAVEL LEADER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Apprentice K T Yeung (QI'S PET), in the presence of his allocated trainer, Mr A T Millard, explained he had been instructed to lead on the horse and obtain the fence. He said QI'S PET took some time to muster speed in the early stages, however, he continued to ride along in an endeavour to go forward. He said when the tempo commenced to steady approaching the 1200 Metres, he allowed QI'S PET to continue forward and was at that time racing three wide outside the lead. He said he continued to go forward to clear MUTUAL GAIN and CHINOOK in an attempt to carry out his instructions. He said at the 1000 Metres he crossed MUTUAL GAIN to race outside CHINOOK, however, that horse continued forward with him. He said after entering the Back Straight he felt CHINOOK might be steadied, therefore he allowed QI'S PET to continue forward, however, was only able to obtain a half length advantage over CHINOOK and shortly after the 800 Metres when it became apparent to him that he would not be able to cross to the fence, he stopped applying pressure to QI'S PET and travelled outside CHINOOK. Mr C S Shum, trainer of QI'S PET, confirmed the riding instructions issued and said in his opinion QI'S PET's best chance in the race would be if was able to lead having in mind it was dropping in class and was receiving a 10 lb claiming allowance. He said overall he was satisfied with the riding of Apprentice Yeung, however, in his opinion he had somewhat misjudged the pace of the race between the 1200 Metres and the 800 Metres. He said he was satisfied Apprentice Yeung did not continue pursuing the lead after the 800 Metres. Apprentice Yeung was told his explanation would be reported. The Stewards opened an inquiry into the riding between the 1200 Metres and the 800 Metres of CHINOOK by Apprentice C K Tong. Evidence was taken from Apprentice Tong in the presence of his allocated trainer, Mr C Fownes and also from Mr D E Ferraris, the trainer of CHINOOK. As Mr Ferraris subsequently left the course, this matter was adjourned until prior to the running of Race 1 at Sha Tin next Sunday 26 March 2006. VINCERE, MUTUAL GAIN and ROCKET WIN were sent for sampling.
