Racing Incident Report
As the start was effected, PACIFIC ALLIANCE reared and as a consequence lost a considerable amount of ground. BROWN BEAUTY and SPEED OF LIGHT were slow to begin. In the early stages, DANSOLDE proved very difficult to settle. Despite being ridden in the early stages, SOARING ANGEL failed to muster speed. Prior to the 1400 Metres, CHALLENGER got its head up when close to the heels of SHOW BRAVELY. Near the 1400 Metres, SOARING ANGEL got its head up. For some distance near the 1000 Metres, BEST CHOICE was steadied away from the heels of FORTUNE GOLD which after crossing to the lead did not continue forward. Prior to straightening, PACIFIC ALLIANCE was steadied to avoid the heels of SPEED OF LIGHT which shifted in slightly. Making the Home Turn, SPECTACULAR HIT was held up and unable to improve when racing behind PACIFIC ALLIANCE. Throughout the race, SPEED OF LIGHT travelled wide and without cover. S Dye (BEST CHOICE) explained because of the anticipated slow tempo of today's race, he had been instructed to ride the horse in about 5th position with cover if possible. He said because of this he rode BEST CHOICE along for a short distance after the start and as the field settled he had obtained a position outside SPECIFIC SORCEROR in the lead. He said BEST CHOICE today after being ridden out of the barriers would not settle for him and over-raced, as a consequence of this when SPECIFIC SORCEROR endeavoured to steady the tempo turning out of the Straight on the first occasion, he elected to allow BEST CHOICE to go forward and cross to the lead in the fence in an endeavour to relax the horse. He said BEST CHOICE travelled comfortably until after the 1100 Metres when FORTUNE GOLD crossed him in the lead and again endeavoured to steady the tempo. He said in the Straight BEST CHOICE did not finish the race off and in his opinion was most disappointing. BEST CHOICE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of BEST CHOICE after the race did not show any significant findings. DANSOLDE, FORTUNE GOLD and HAPPY CONTENDER were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported DANSOLDE had lost its left hind plate and SPECIFIC SORCEROR had lost its right front plate.
