Racing Incident Report

CLASSIC HORSE began awkwardly, got its head up and lost ground. DANEMAN HILL, which turned its head to the left just prior to the start being effected, began awkwardly, shifted out, bumped QUICK NEWS and as a consequence took time to muster speed. SILVERBIRD was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, CROWNED GEM and EAST OCEAN DRAGON were steadied when crowded for room between PO ON GEM which was carried in by WHIPLASH and QUICK NEWS which shifted out after being bumped by DANEMAN HILL. In the early stages, PO ON GEM proved difficult to settle. With the intention of being ridden quietly from the outside barrier, ETERNAL DRAGON proved difficult to settle in the early stages. On straightening, CLASSIC HORSE was steadied and shifted to the inside of EAST OCEAN DRAGON to obtain clear running. After this, CLASSIC HORSE continued to have difficulty obtaining clear running and near the 300 Metres was shifted to the outside of QUICK NEWS to go forward. Approaching and passing the 100 Metres, QUICK NEWS had difficulty obtaining clear running. In the Straight, PO ON GEM hung in. W C Marwing (CROWNED GEM) said he had been told the horse would put itself in a forward position. He said after being crowded for room at the start CROWNED GEM immediately dropped the bit and raced near the rear. He said at no stage of the race did CROWNED GEM travel comfortably and in the Straight did not close the race off. He said as he had not previously ridden CROWNED GEM, he was unable to offer any explanation for the poor performance of the horse, however, he did say the trainer told him following the race the horse performed in a similar manner at its most recent race start. CROWNED GEM was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of CROWNED GEM after the race did not show any significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, CROWNED GEM will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. WHIPLASH and SUPER HONEY were sent for sampling.
