Racing Incident Report

Prior to the running of Race 1, SUPER DRAGON was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said SUPER DRAGON was lame in the left front leg as a result of a puncture wound and as such was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of SUPER DRAGON. Before being allowed to race again, SUPER DRAGON will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. BRAVE COMMANDER began awkwardly, threw its head up and lost ground. After this, BRAVE COMMANDER was ridden along but failed to muster speed and travelled wide and without cover throughout the race. On jumping, WYNDAM PLENTY and PEACH BLOSSOM were crowded for room between MILLENNIUM DAWN and AMBITION, both of which shifted ground. As a result of this crowding, PEACH BLOSSOM was checked. FLASH HARRY began awkwardly. At the 900 Metres, PLEASANT JOURNEY got its head up and lost ground when being steadied as a result of being momentarily crowded for room inside LUCKY ENCOUNTER (B Prebble) which shifted in slightly. Having considered all the evidence including the evidence of W M Lai that his mount had over-reacted when being steadied, it was decided B Prebble should be severely reprimanded and told to exercise greater care. Making the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight, PEACH BLOSSOM was held up and unable to improve when racing inside FLASH HARRY and behind SUNRISE STRIKER. For some distance after straightening, KIWI DASH was held up and unable to obtain clear running between FLASH HARRY and LUCKY ENCOUNTER. S Dye (AMBITION) said prior to the race he had been told the horse is not a good beginner and therefore it was anticipated would race in a rearward position. He said he was asked to ride AMBITION quietly and save it for the Home Straight because there was some doubt as to the ability of AMBITION to run out the 1400 Metres strongly. S Dye said today AMBITION began well, he allowed it to travel forward in the early stages without being ridden vigorously to do so. He said shortly after the start when he was in front of WYNDAM PLENTY, he decided to allow AMBITION to go further forward, clear that runner and race in the lead. Mr K W Lui, trainer of AMBITION, confirmed the riding instructions issued to S Dye. He said he believed the improved performance of AMBITION today was due to the horse having had a freshen-up following its last run. BRAVE COMMANDER was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of BRAVE COMMANDER after the race did not show any significant findings. D Whyte (FLASH HARRY) was unable to offer any explanation for the poor performance of the horse. He said FLASH HARRY enjoyed a comfortable run throughout the race, however, had disappointed by failing to close the race off. FLASH HARRY was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of FLASH HARRY after the race did not show any significant findings. AMBITION and WYNDAM PLENTY were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported PEACH BLOSSOM had lost its right front plate.
