Racing Incident Report

CHOICE AND CHANCE began very awkwardly and lost a considerable amount of ground. Near the 1000 Metes, WALKONTHEWILDSIDE was steadied to avoid the heels of WELL NOTED (D Nikolic) which shifted in when not properly clear. D Nikolic was advised to exercise greater care. Approaching the 800 Metres, WELL NOTED proved difficult to settle and got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of NATIVE KID. At the 600 Metres, CHOICE AND CHANCE was steadied when close to the heels of RIVER JORDAN. On straightening, RIVER JORDAN, which was disappointed for running between GOLDEN CARE and CHATER DE LAGO, was steadied and shifted in. Also on straightening, SUNNY POWER was steadied away from the heels of SAVUTE. At the 50 Metres, EVERGREEN was steadied and shifted out away from the heels of LUCKY WINNER. Close to the line, WALKONTHEWILDSIDE was checked to avoid the heels of RIVER JORDAN (W M Lai) which shifted in when not properly clear. In the circumstances, W M Lai was severely reprimanded and told to exercise greater care. Throughout the race, FLORAL PRINCE travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, R Fradd (NATIVE KID) said the horse travelled comfortably in the run, however, when placed under pressure after straightening did not respond. He said NATIVE KID became a little unbalanced in its action when placed under pressure and because the horse was not responding, he did not give it a punishing ride in the Straight. He said on pulling up after the race he noted NATIVE KID had its tongue over the bit. S Dye (ALWAYS GIGGLE) explained the intention had been to have the horse ridden behind midfield. He said because the horse had raced prominently at its last start, he intentionally did not stir the horse up prior to the race in an attempt to ensure it would settle for him. He said ALWAYS GIGGLE began satisfactorily, he initially rode it quietly to follow his instructions, but then passing the 1300 Metres he commenced to ride his mount along as he was concerned it was not striding out as he thought it should and consequently was getting further back than intended. He said he continued to make some use of ALWAYS GIGGLE until near the 800 Metres, however, the horse continued to give ground. He said after the 800 Metres he shifted to the fence to see if ALWAYS GIGGLE would travel more kindly, however, when it failed to do so he again commenced to ride along approaching and passing the 600 Metres. He said after this he shifted ALWAYS GIGGLE out to ensure the horse had clear running, however, in the Straight ALWAYS GIGGLE was inclined to hang in and whilst it did make some ground in his opinion was disappointing. He concluded by saying at no stage of the race did ALWAYS GIGGLE feel comfortable in its action. Mr C W Chang, trainer of ALWAYS GIGGLE, confirmed the riding instructions and after viewing the video of the race said it appeared to him that the horse was reluctant to stride out in the early stages. He said in the circumstances he was satisfied with the riding of S Dye. Before being allowed to race again, ALWAYS GIGGLE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. NATIVE KID and ALWAYS GIGGLE were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of NATIVE KID and ALWAYS GIGGLE after the race did not show any significant findings. SUNNY POWER and RIVER JORDAN were sent for sampling.
