Racing Incident Report
CHAMPIONS GALLERY was withdrawn on raceday morning by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame both front legs). Before being allowed to race again, CHAMPIONS GALLERY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. LHOJONG began awkwardly, got its head up, shifted in and bumped with MEDICO. As a consequence, LHOJONG lost ground. Shortly after the start, PLASTIC POLYMER was steadied when crowded for room between SOCRATES and FLYING TAMARI. After entering the Back Straight, MEDICO, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up on a number of occasions. Making the turn at the 800 Metes, PLASTIC POLYMER got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of MEDICO. Shortly after this, MEDICO got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of MAVERICK STAR. Also making the turn at the 800 Metres, LHOJONG got its head up, shifted out and was checked away from the heels of DASH AHEAD. Making the Home Turn, SOCRATES was bumped and carried wider by LHOJONG which shifted out into clear running. From on straightening until near the 200 Metres, INFINITE DELIGHT was held up and unable to obtain clear running. At the 250 Metres, PLASTER POLYMER got its head on the side and hung in. Because of this, D Whyte, its rider, stopped riding and straightened his mount. At the 150 Metres, PLASTER POLYMER was steadied when awkwardly placed between DASH AHEAD which was giving ground and LHOJONG which shifted in. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of the view that an incident occurred over the final 150 Metres which cast doubt on whether FLYING TAMARI should be declared the winner of the race. They decided there was justification to have the matter resolved formally at a protest/objection hearing (Rule 123). Following the conduct of a formal hearing, the Stewards on all the available evidence were of the opinion that by continually shifting in over the final 150 Metres and carrying INFINITE DELIGHT away from the running to which it was rightfully entitled, FLYING TAMARI had caused interference to INFINITE DELIGHT. The Stewards formed the opinion that INFINITE DELIGHT would have finished ahead of FLYING TAMARI had the interference which took place not occurred. In sustaining the protest/objection, the Stewards placed FLYING TAMARI immediately behind INFINITE DELIGHT [Rule 101(2)]. Accordingly the amended placings became INFINITE DELIGHT 1st, FLYING TAMARI 2nd, LHOJONG 3rd, and DASH AHEAD 4th. G Mossé, the rider of INFINITE DELIGHT, explained that he did not lodge a protest/objection as he was aware the inquiry sign had been put up in relation to this incident. G Mossé was severely reprimanded for failing to lodge a protest/objection on behalf of the connections of INFINITE DELIGHT. W M Lai, the rider of FLYING TAMARI, was reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mount. At the 50 Metres, PLASTER POLYMER was steadied away from the heels of LHOJONG which shifted in. C Soumillon (MEDICO) said he had been riding the horse in its track work which in his opinion had been good. He said he was instructed to ride the horse which was racing over an increased distance today in a more forward position. He said after beginning well MEDICO was able to obtain a forward position without being made use of, however, in the Straight gave ground and was most disappointing. He did say prior to the race MEDICO had become very stirred and sweated up noticeably. He said at times during the race MEDICO did not appear to concentrate. MEDICO was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of MEDICO after the race did not show any significant findings. PLASTIC POLYMER, INFINITE DELIGHT and FLYING TAMARI were sent for sampling.
