Racing Incident Report
ROCKET POWER was slow to begin. From the outside barriers, CRUSH ON YOU and HAPPY KID were taken across behind runners. Shortly after the start, SHINING DRAGON was checked when crowded for room between ISLAND SPEED and KAISER'S CHOIX, both of which shifted ground. Also shortly after the start, RED STORM RISING was steadied when crowded for room between HAPPY KID and SURE JOY which at this time shifted out slightly. Making the turn at the 1000 Metres, SHINING DRAGON got its head up when close to the heels of HAPPY SUNDAY. M Nunes (LAMBRO) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 600 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of FLAG FINDER, causing that horse to be carried in across the running of HAPPY SUNDAY which as a result was checked. M Nunes was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Sunday 11 March 2007 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting next Sunday 4 March 2007. In addition, M Nunes was fined $30,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating 1 further raceday. At the 250 Metres, HAPPY KID, which in the early part of the Straight had been reluctant to shift out, was awkwardly placed outside the heels of SURE JOY. Approaching the 200 Metres, STEP FORWARD was awkwardly placed outside the heels of KAISER'S CHOIX. After the 200 Metres, LAMBRO got its head on the side and shifted out. Because of this, M Nunes, its rider, stopped riding and straightened his mount. Just prior to the winning post, LAMBRO was brushed by SHINING DRAGON which shifted in. For the major part of the race, SURE JOY travelled wide and without cover. F Coetzee (HAPPY SUNDAY) explained he had been told when the horse was run quick times in the early sections it usually did not perform to its best. He said in recent starts when being ridden by an apprentice jockey HAPPY SUNDAY when able to set a more moderate tempo had managed better performances. He said having this in mind from the inside barrier he decided not to ride HAPPY SUNDAY along from the start, but rather allow the horse to maintain its position to the inside of FLAG FINDER which he felt would enable him to lead at a suitable tempo. He said after the 1100 Metres he noted ISLAND SPEED which had drawn further out being hard ridden to go forward. He said at that time ISLAND SPEED had sufficient pace to cross to the lead on the fence. HAPPY KID was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of HAPPY KID after the race did not show any significant findings. FLAG FINDER, ISLAND SPEED and SHINING DRAGON were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 1 March 2007)
HAPPY KID, which performed poorly, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. HAPPY KID was again examined by the Head of Veterinary Regulation & International Liaison at the stables of Trainer C S Shum this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to have a right fore tendon injury. Before being allowed to race again, HAPPY KID will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
