Racing Incident Report

On jumping, MASTER ABLE, which was fractious in its stall, was a little slow to begin, then shortly afterwards lost further ground when being steadied away from the heels of DONGGUAN VICTORY which at this time shifted out. Making the turn at the 700 Metres, STAR PRODIGY was steadied away from the heels of STARFINDER. Prior to straightening, STAR PRODIGY and GOLD GEM bumped, causing both horses to become unbalanced. As a result of this, STAR PRODIGY was steadied. Throughout the race, STARFINDER travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, S Dye (COULDN’T CARE LESS) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in a rearward position as he has done previously. He said after COULDN’T CARE LEES was slow to begin, he allowed the horse to travel in a rearward position as instructed. He said travelling along the Back Straight he remained racing on the rail and COULDN’T CARE LESS travelled comfortably. He said after commencing to make the turn at the 700 Metres he followed one of the favoured runners, DANZIGMOUNTAIN, which he believed would carry him forward into the race. For this reason, he remained racing on the rail rather than shifting away from the rail. He said after the 500 Metres there was an opportunity for him to improve on the outside of DANZIGMOUNTAIN, however, he did not avail himself of this opportunity as that would have positioned him behind BAUHINIA and DONGGUAN VICTORY which he doubted would figure in the finish of the race. He said therefore on straightening he commenced to improve into a position towards the inside of DANZIGMOUNTAIN, however, that horse then shifted back towards the rail, resulting in him being disappointed for running and steadying his mount. He said he shifted COULDN’T CARE LESS out and the horse closed the race off strongly. S Dye conceded on a number of occasions COULDN’T CARE LESS has performed well when being ridden wide in the Straight, however, he did say the horse has shown itself to be able to take runs through the field. Mr A Schutz, trainer of COULDN’T CARE LESS, confirmed he asked S Dye to ride the horse in a rearward position. He said while he was disappointed that COULDN’T CARE LESS was unable to obtain clear running in the early part of the Straight, he accepted S Dye’s explanation for remaining racing on the rail following a favoured runner. He said in his opinion for S Dye to have shifted to the outside of the field on COULDN’T CARE LESS as he had done when the horse was successful last start would have been difficult as a number of runners were already racing wide on the track. He said in the circumstances he was not critical of S Dye’s decision to remain racing on the rail. S Dye was told his explanation would be reported. When questioned regarding the poor performance of DANZIGMOUNTAIN, E Saint-Martin said his mount travelled only fairly throughout the race, making the Home Turn hung out, then in the early part of the Straight had difficulty obtaining clear running. He said when clear running did present itself, DANZIGMOUNTAIN was disappointing in the manner in which it finished the race off. He said he was not able to offer any explanation for the performance of the horse. DANZIGMOUNTAIN and PERFECT ATHLETE were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of DANZIGMOUNTAIN and PERFECT ATHLETE after the race did not show any significant findings. DRAGON STRIDE and GOLD GEM were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted MASTER ABLE had blood present in its mouth from a wound to its upper lip.
