Racing Incident Report

RED WINE HONEY was withdrawn on 1.2.07 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (sore right fore tendon) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter HAPPY FIT. Before being allowed to race again, RED WINE HONEY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After arriving at the Start, it was noted WINNING PATTERN had its tongue over the bit. This was corrected prior to the horse being loaded. HAPPY FIT and EVER KING were slow to begin. CAPABILITY was slow to begin and then taken across behind runners from a wide barrier. When the gates opened, FANTASTIC WIN lifted its front feet off the ground, then shortly afterwards was steadied away from the heels of CLASSIC KING which shifted in. Due to the pace of the race, in the early stages, a number of horses proved difficult to settle. Most affected were EVER KING, HAPPY FIT, WINNING PATTERN and FUJIAN PRINCE which was racing without cover. At the 200 Metres, WINNING PATTERN, which was commencing to give ground, was steadied when crowded for room between CLASSIC KING which was carried out slightly by SOUTH BREEZE and SAFETY FIRST which was carried in by SUPER GOAL MASTER. In the circumstances, no action was taken. At the 100 Metres, CLASSIC KING and SAFETY FIRST bumped. When questioned, M W Leung (EVER KING) said on straightening SINOSPIEL which he was following was endeavouring to shift out, however, ABLE STANDARD appeared to be holding that runner in. He said because of this he believed SINOSPIEL would be caught racing close to the fence behind the leaders which he felt might give ground. He said because of this he commenced to shift EVER KING out in the hope of finding clear running. He said after the 300 Metres he continued to maintain his position behind SINOSPIEL as at that time it appeared that horse would obtain clear running and go forward. He said near the 200 Metres he noticed the leaders had kicked on and at this stage he shifted back to the inside of SINOSPIEL into clear running. M W Leung was told in the opinion of the Stewards he had persisted for too long a period in endeavouring to obtain running away from the fence where a clear run did not exist while at all times unimpeded running was available on the rail. He was severely reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he must avail himself of opportunities to improve his position, particularly at vital stages of the race. Apprentice C K Tong (FANTASTIC WIN) said he had been instructed to allow the horse to travel where it was comfortable which was anticipated to be in 7th or 8th position. He said the manner in which the race was run in the early stages resulted in him being slightly further back than anticipated. He said prior to straightening he shifted away from the rail as he felt SOUTH BREEZE which was racing forward of him would carry him into the race. He said after straightening he again shifted wider as it appeared the running was opening up on the inside of SOUTH BREEZE and outside HAPPY FIT, however, when commencing to improve towards this position he noted FUJIAN PRINCE which was racing forward of him was giving ground, he therefore shifted to the outside of that horse and continued to follow SOUTH BREEZE. He said as a consequence FANTASTIC WIN did not obtain clear running until after the 100 Metres and therefore was not fully tested. CAPABILITY was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, CAPABILITY was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. SAFETY FIRST, MIRACULOUS and SOUTH BREEZE were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted FUJIAN PRINCE had lost the right hind plate.
