Racing Incident Report

After being boxed, GEM OF CHIU TON became fractious and reared. GEM OF CHIU TON was removed from its stall and examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. After being re-boxed, GEM OF CHIU TON again became fractious, reared up and had its left front leg caught over the adjoining stall partition. The horse was again removed from its stall and examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion the horse was stiff in its action and as such was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of GEM OF CHIU TON. Before being allowed to race again, GEM OF CHIU TON will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. TIME SUPREME stood flat-footed at the start and lost a considerable amount of ground. Before being allowed to race again, TIME SUPREME will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. AMPLE GAINS was slow to begin. Consideration was given to a protest/objection lodged by B Prebble, the rider of GALLANT CHAMPION, 4th placegetter, against MEDICO (G Boss) being declared the 3rd placegetter for alleged interference after the 1400 Metres. The evidence disclosed that after the 1400 Metres GALLANT CHAMPION was checked when crowded for room inside MEDICO which shifted in when not clear. Having in mind the manner in which both horses closed the race off in the Home Straight and the short head margin between them at the end of the race, the Stewards formed the opinion that had the interference which did take place not occurred GALLANT CHAMPION would have finished in front of MEDICO, therefore the protest/objection was sustained. Accordingly the amended placings became 1st, No. 7, DANESIS; 2nd, No. 12, WHIPLASH; 3rd, No. 8, GALLANT CHAMPION, and 4th, No. 10, MEDICO. At a subsequent inquiry, G Boss pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that after the 1400 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of GALLANT CHAMPION, causing that horse which had been ridden along to make up ground to lose its rightful running and be checked. When GALLANT CHAMPION checked, it shifted out, causing SOUTH BREEZE to be carried out across the running of CHINA WIN which as a result struck the heels of SOUTH BREEZE, blundered and be checked severely. FIRM OFFER, which was following, was checked in consequence. In this incident, crowding was also caused to OPERATION SECRET and AMPLE GAINS. Having considered all the circumstances including the contributing factors to this incident, the Stewards believed it appropriate for G Boss to be fined a sum of $75,000 in lieu of a period of suspension which will cover 3 Hong Kong racedays. Near the 300 Metres, WHIPLASH was momentarily steadied and shifted to the inside of DANESIS to obtain clear running. After the 300 Metres, C W Wong (INDUSTRIAL MARVEL) dropped his whip. In the Straight, GALLANT CHAMPION hung in. Throughout the race, MEDICO travelled wide and without cover. CHINA WIN was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of CHINA WIN after the race did not show any significant findings. DANESIS and WHIPLASH were sent for sampling.
