Racing Incident Report

Prior to the 400 Metres, WIN PRACTITIONER became unbalanced after being bumped heavily by BULLISH CASH (B Prebble) which shifted out to obtain clear running. B Prebble was severely reprimanded and told to exercise greater care. After the 400 Metres, WIN PRACTITIONER was brushed and carried wider by BULLISH CASH which shifted out further. When questioned, K L Chui (GREAT GUY) said he had been instructed to ride his mount in a midfield position. Mr A S Cruz, trainer of GREAT GUY, confirmed the riding instructions issued to K L Chui and said he had been disappointed with the manner in which GREAT GUY had been finishing its races off when being ridden in a forward position. He said today GREAT GUY was on a 7 day backup, he felt the horse would not race freely and therefore it was a suitable opportunity to have the horse ridden more quietly in an endeavour to turn around its form. K L Chui said GREAT GUY began satisfactorily and in the early stages he did not ride along as he wished to ensure GREAT GUY relaxed. He said near the 1600 Metres AMBITIOUS GENERAL went forward of him and he felt if he were able to follow that horse, he would be riding in accordance with his instructions. He added as GREAT GUY was relaxed, he did not ride along to consolidate his position behind AMBITIOUS GENERAL as he felt his mount would gradually take him forward into that position. He said however GREAT GUY continued to race in a relaxed manner which enabled AGILITY to improve its position from behind GREAT GUY and cross to race in front of him on the fence after the 1200 Metres. He said as a consequence GREAT GUY travelled further back than intended. He did say GREAT GUY closed the race off strongly as a result of being ridden more quietly. Mr Cruz said he was satisfied with the manner in which GREAT GUY closed the race off and it will be his intention to have the horse ridden in a midfield position if circumstances permit in its upcoming races. The Stewards advised Mr Cruz his explanation would be noted. K L Chui was told in the opinion of the Stewards his riding in the early stages of the race had come under notice and he had overdone the riding instructions issued to him. He was also told in future he would be expected to make a greater effort to avail his mounts of more advantageous positions in races where circumstances allow. When questioned, F Coetzee (WIN PRACTITIONER) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse in a position with cover and to shift it wider on the track in the Straight to ensure it had clear running. He said he was hopeful of obtaining a position in front of midfield as he was concerned the tempo of the race might not be that strong. He said WIN PRACTITIONER began fairly, he rode along in the early stages, however, his mount failed to muster speed and as a consequence travelled in a rearward position further back than he had hoped. He said in the early stages he was travelling in a three wide position at the rear in a moderately run race. He said he was concerned if he were to restrain WIN PRACTITIONER back to a position with cover at the rear, the horse would be disadvantaged. He said after the 1200 Metres he decided to attempt to make up some gradual ground on WIN PRACTITIONER and to do so he continued to race in a three wide position. He said after the 800 Metres he continued to ride WIN PRACTITIONER along hands and heels, however, the horse did not respond to his riding. He added after the 600 Metres he slapped WIN PRACTITIONER down the shoulder with the whip in an endeavour to have the horse improve, however, it continued to fail to respond to his riding. He said after being hampered on straightening WIN PRACTITIONER failed to finish the race off. F Coetzee’s explanation was noted. WIN PRACTITIONER was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. After the race, WIN PRACTITIONER was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was lame in its right hind leg. Before being allowed to race again, WIN PRACTITIONER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. LU YUE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of LU YUE after the race did not show any significant findings. VIVA MACAU and FEARLESS were sent for sampling.
