Racing Incident Report

SPY KING, Standby Declared Starter, was withdrawn on 5.3.09 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (inappetance). Before being allowed to race again, SPY KING will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. As Apprentice M L Yeung, the declared rider of SIMPLY THE BEST, was overweight, the Stewards gave permission for C W Wong to be substituted. Apprentice Yeung was fined $5,000 for accepting this ride when overweight [Rule 88(5)]. MULTI-WIN SPIRIT got its head up at the start and lost ground. SO NICE and MASTER MASTER were slow to begin. After the 1200 Metres, MASTER MASTER was steadied away from the heels of REAL PLEASURE which was racing tight inside OWNERS LAD which in turn was racing tight inside FISHKING EXCELLENT. P H Lo (OPTIC KING) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 1000 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of FISHKING EXCELLENT, causing that horse to be carried in, resulting in crowding on its inside to OWNERS LAD which lost its rightful running and was checked and REAL PLEASURE which was hampered. P H Lo was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Monday 23 March 2009 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting on Sunday 15 March 2009. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, OWNERS LAD was shifted out when being steadied away from the heels of FISHKING EXCELLENT which was steadied when crowded for room between OPTIC KING and REAL PLEASURE which got its head on the side and shifted out. Near the 700 Metres, PALIO KING, which for some distance had been racing tight inside the heels of AIPODER IMAGE, was checked when crowded for room between AIPODER IMAGE and SO NICE (H W Lai) which after initially being carried in by PALIO KING was then shifted back out. In the circumstances, H W Lai was reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he would be expected to make a greater effort to protect his fellow riders. For some distance after the 400 Metres, DAYLIGHT EXPRESS had difficulty obtaining clear running. At the 200 Metres, MULTI-WIN SPIRIT, which was improving into a narrow run, was checked when momentarily crowded for room between OPTIC KING which was giving ground and MASTER MASTER. M W Leung (AIPODER IMAGE) explained the horse had disappointed in recent starts when being ridden in a forward position. He said today from the outside barrier he was asked to ride his mount in a position with cover and endeavour to have it close the race off. He said AIPODER IMAGE began well, he did not ride along in the early stages and endeavoured to shift across to obtain a position with cover around midfield. He said as he allowed AIPODER IMAGE to drift back, PALIO KING which had drawn to his inside was also allowed to drift back and as a consequence he allowed AIPODER IMAGE to drop to a position with the rear in the hope of obtaining cover. He said when PALIO KING held its ground inside AIPODER IMAGE, he was not able to obtain cover throughout the race. He said making the Home Turn AIPODER IMAGE was carried wider by SO NICE and then closed the race off fairly. When questioned regarding the poor performance of SUPER RED, Apprentice M Chadwick said his mount was not able to obtain an uncontested lead today. He said in his opinion SUPER RED is best suited when able to obtain an outright lead and dictate the tempo of the race. He said SUPER RED came under pressure shortly after straightening and commenced to give ground quickly after the 300 Metres. SUPER RED was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SUPER RED after the race did not show any significant findings. In the circumstances, the performance of SUPER RED was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, SUPER RED will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. OWNERS LAD was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, OWNERS LAD was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said there were no significant findings other than the horse had lost its right front plate. The performance of OWNERS LAD, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, OWNERS LAD will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. REAL PLEASURE, DAYLIGHT EXPRESS and HOT SUN were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that PALIO KING had sustained a laceration to the right hind cannon and an injury to the splint bone in the right hind leg. Before being allowed to race again, PALIO KING will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
