Racing Incident Report

REDOUTE STAR, SUPER SURPRISE and SOMETHING SPECIAL were slow to begin. A Suborics (JOLLY WONGCHOY) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that approaching the 1600 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of DR WELL, causing that horse to be checked and in turn taken in onto OLYMPICSHIP, resulting in that horse being hampered. In this incident, SOMETHING SPECIAL was steadied away from the heels of OLYMPICSHIP in consequence. A Suborics was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Monday 25 January 2010 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting on Saturday 16 January 2010. After being crossed by JOLLY WONGCHOY passing the winning post on the first occasion, NEW IDEA proved difficult to settle and was steadied away from the heels of that horse for some distance. Near the 450 Metres, ENERGETIC BOY was steadied when crowded for room inside FANTASTIC DANCER which at this time got its head on the side and shifted in when awkwardly placed close to the heels of BREAKING POINT. An inquiry into the reason for SURE GAIN (W C Marwing) and BREAKING POINT falling rounding the Home Turn was adjourned until a date to be fixed as K L Chui, the rider of BREAKING POINT, was unable to attend the inquiry due to being transported to hospital. W C Marwing was examined by the Club’s doctor and passed fit to continue riding. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that SURE GAIN was lame in the left front leg and that BREAKING POINT had sustained cuts to all four heels. Before being allowed to race again, SURE GAIN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Shortly after straightening, SUPER SURPRISE and ENERGETIC BOY brushed as ENERGETIC BOY shifted out to obtain clear running to the outside of DR WELL. REDOUTE STAR, which was following, was shifted out to obtain clear running. For the majority of the race, SURE GAIN travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, A Suborics stated that he had been instructed to lead on the horse if possible, however, if other horses pressured him in the early stages, it was acceptable to take a sit behind those horses. He said from the outside barrier he allowed JOLLY WONGCHOY to stride forward in the early stages and he elected to allow the horse to continue to stride along rather than restraining it after obtaining the lead. He said he had viewed videos of the horse’s previous starts and, in his opinion, JOLLY WONGCHOY had resented being restrained and for this reason he believed it was best not to take hold of his mount in the early and middle stages. He said although the second section of the race was somewhat quick, JOLLY WONGCHOY relaxed with him on entering the Back Straight, however, given the sectionals that JOLLY WONGCHOY had run in the early stages of the race, the horse was then unable to finish off the race. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of DR WELL, D Whyte stated that his mount travelled well until near the 600 Metres at which time it commenced to lay out. He said he attempted to hold NEW IDEA in to his inside, however, DR WELL was not travelling well and he was concerned with the manner in which it subsequently weakened in the Straight. A veterinary inspection of DR WELL after the race did not show any significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, DR WELL will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. NEW IDEA, OLYMPICSHIP and FANTASTIC DANCER were sent for sampling.
