Racing Incident Report

CONNOISSEUR’S LOVE was withdrawn on 30.4.10 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (sore left fore medial splint) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter GOLD CITY (M Du Plessis). Before being allowed to race again, CONNOISSEUR’S LOVE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Whilst in the saddling stalls, FULL STAR had its left front plate refitted. TOM’S EIGHTH, which was difficult to load, will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test before being allowed to race again. After being loaded, FULL STAR became fractious. Before being allowed to race again, FULL STAR will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. TRAVEL KING began awkwardly. Shortly after the start, FULL STAR and SOUNDS EXCELLENT were crowded for room between TOM’S EIGHTH which shifted out slightly and GOLD CITY which shifted in. Near the 1400 Metres, FOREST FOUNTAIN was crowded for room inside SOUNDS EXCELLENT which itself was hampered when FULL STAR (J Lloyd) got its head on the side and shifted in. J Lloyd was advised to ensure he makes every effort to prevent his mounts from shifting ground in similar circumstances. FOREST FOUNTAIN hung in in the early part of the Straight and proved difficult to shift to the outside of GREAT FANTASY. After this, FOREST FOUNTAIN continued to hang in and over the concluding stages was awkwardly placed close to the heels of SUPER GALILEO. When questioned, M Chadwick (TRAVEL KING) stated that with the step up in distance from the 1400 Metres to the 1600 Metres, he was instructed to obtain a position behind the leaders if possible. He said due to the circumstances of the race he was not able to obtain a position behind the leaders, but rather TRAVEL KING was obliged to race outside the lead. He added when ridden in a forward position today, TRAVEL KING finished off the race only one-paced. Trainer A S Cruz explained that at its most recent start on a track rated “Good to Yielding”, TRAVEL KING travelled keenly and had gone further out of its ground than he would have hoped. He said for this reason he elected to step TRAVEL KING up in distance today and have the horse ridden in a more forward position. He said he had hoped that the horse, despite being drawn barrier 13, might be able to obtain a position behind the leaders. He added however that TRAVEL KING was not suited by being obliged to race outside the leader and consequently did not finish off the race as well as he had hoped. NEW IDEA and SOUNDS EXCELLENT were sent for sampling.
